Es ist die Nacht bevor sich Rockmusiker Eric Draven (Brandon Lee) und seine Verlobte Shelly Webster (Sofia Shinas) das Ja-Wort geben wollen. Es ist 'Teufelsnacht', die Nacht vor Halloween. Kriminelle ziehen durch die unsagbar düstere Stadt, brandschatzen und tyrannisieren die Bewohner. Vor allem die Männer des Gangsters Top Dollar (Michael Wincott) kennen keine Gnade. Sie überfallen Eric und Shelly in ihrer Wohnung, und Eric muss hilflos mit ansehen, wie die Gang seine Verlobte vergewaltigt und anschließend ermordet, bevor sie auch ihn töten. Ein Jahr nach dem Verbrechen steigt Eric aus seinem Grab, an seiner Seite eine Krähe als ständiger Begleiter. Sie hat ihn zum Leben erweckt, sie verleiht ihm übernatürliche Kräfte, durch ihre Augen sieht er alles - auch seine und Shellys Mörder.
