José Mojica Marins als Regisseur und Hauptcharakter in einer Person. Marins begann mit diesem schwarz-weißen Film eigentlich eine Serie über einen Friedhofswärter namens Zé, der abergläubische Bewohner eines kleinen brasilianischen Dorfes für sein eigenes Glück und seinen eigenen Nutzen ausnutzt. Der Charakter ist also zweideutig, definitiv nicht typisch positiv und für mich auch nicht besonders sympathisch. Aber das ist mein Problem. Auf jeden Fall funktioniert der erste Teil dieser heute bereits kultigen Horrortrilogie mehr als gut. Es fehlen auch nicht die wichtigen Elemente eines guten Horrorfilms wie Gräber, Leichen und ein Mitternachtsfriedhof voller Geister. Einfach oldschool wie Sau.

José Mojica Marins showed with the film "At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul" that horror can really be made anywhere, but that one needs talent for a quality horror film. And Marins definitely had talent. More than fifty years ago, he was not afraid to include a bit of explicitness, but he still succeeds mainly thanks to the oppressive atmosphere and intensity of individual scenes. The final scenes are truly a highlight, including from the perspective of the masks.
