Die Familie Tenenbaum ist alles andere als normal. Sohn Chas (Ben Stiller) ist ein Finanzgenie, Tochter Margot (Gwyneth Paltrow) eine gefeierte Autorin und Sohn Richie (Luke Wilson) ein Tennis-Champion. Eigentlich wären die Tenenbaums eine echte Vorzeigefamilie, hätte nicht Vater Royal Tenenbaum (Gene Hackman) seine Frau Etheline (Anjelica Huston) samt Kindern vor 22 Jahren verlassen und damit den Niedergang der Familie heraufbeschworen. Als Royal nach zwei Jahrzehnten das Geld ausgeht, kehrt er unter Vortäuschung einer lebensgefährlichen Krankheit nach Hause zurück. Sein Ziel: die Zusammenführung der Familie. Sein Problem: Aus seinen Kindern sind neurotische Exzentriker geworden, für die 'Familie' ein Fremdwort ist. (Buena Vista Int. DE)

Die ersten zwanzig Minuten waren wie von Woody Allen, dann ging der Film seinen eigenen Weg. Und das ist ein Weg, der mir sehr gut gefällt. Owen Wilson überrascht mich immer wieder. In Midnight in Paris fand ich ihn hervorragend, weil er die Rolle von „Woody ohne Woody“ gemeistert hat. Ich wusste auch nicht, dass er Wes Anderson bei seinen frühen Werken mit dem Drehbuch half. Die Besetzung ist super, oft aus seinen Hofschauspielern zusammengestellt, was ja ein Markenzeichen von Andersons Filmen ist. Pagoda ist die witzigste Figur, Gwyneth Paltrow ist eine verrückte sexy Femme fatale.

The bizarreness that Anderson brought to the extreme in The Life Aquatic is still served in the style of amusing peculiarity, in this case combined with occasional, almost gentle humor. And the screenplay plays very sweetly with the characters until the very end. Hackman and Stiller simply lead the family at a sharp pace in the position of one of the most specific feel-good movies I've ever seen.

Sorry, Wes, but this time I didn't understand your artistic intention. Sure, the film has a polished style and it is greatly cast. But I don't know what to make of your sense of humor and storytelling method. I don't necessarily have to understand the film, but it should be attractive to me in some way. Yet it leaves me indifferent. I consider it a weird film that I had a hard time watching at all. So maybe next time. Overall impression: 35%. I feel like you were still searching because ten years later you made films that were able to put me in a state of euphoria...

Wes, I gave you a second go with this movie. I wanted to give you a chance since you won me over with Grandhotel Budapest. But I have to tell you that even now that I watched it for the second time, this movie with its strange humor seems really weird to me. I keep watching and watching… but it’s doing nothing for me. There are some good ideas, that’s for sure. You had good ideas already back in the day. Maybe you were just starting up here, but it was working already back then. But the humor that works so well in Grandhotel seems to be going nowhere in this one. I’m sorry… maybe I will give it a third go one day and apologize to you. But not this time.

Probably Wes Anderson's most beautiful and moving film and one of Gene Hackman's best roles. A wonderful piece that you will experience with all the Tenenbaums (and co.) and feel like you belong to that family too. If someone wanted me to describe what the magic of this film is, I wouldn't bother inventing the unthinkable and would just sit them down in front of the TV, because this is a must-see.
