James Bond verhilft KGB-General Koskov, der vorgibt, überlaufen zu wollen, zur Flucht in den Westen. Doch bald stellt sich heraus, dass Koskov ein Doppelagent ist. Als er entwischt, setzt sich Bond auf seine Spur. Bei der aufregenden Verfolgungsjagd und seinen halsbrecherischen Abenteuern bekommt der Geheimagent unerwartet Hilfe von einer schönen Kollegin aus dem russischen Lager. (ORF)

Die Serie von zwanzig Filmen mit einem Helden ist einzigartig, weil dieser Held unter anderem mehrere Formen annimmt. Und wie macht sich das vierte Gesicht von 007? Ausgezeichnet! Der Wunsch des Produktionsteams war ganz klar: etwas völlig anderes als die Moores zu schaffen, einen völlig "neuen" Bond. Und Dalton war eine glückliche Wahl. Im Gegensatz zum charmanten Kauz Moore hat der vierte Bond das Image eines gefährlichen Attentäters und eines typischen Actionhelden. Allerdings fehlt es ihm nicht an dem traditionell trockenen und geschüttelten (nicht gerührten) Sinn für Humor und der Kunst, im richtigen Moment einen sarkastischen Spruch abzulassen, ähnlich wie eine tödliche Kugel. Der Protagonist verbindet die mörderische Kälte blauer Augen mit einem kindlich-verführerischen Lächeln. Die Geschichte versucht (wieder einmal), zum Modell von James Bond 007 - Liebesgrüße aus Moskau zurückzukehren (sprich: zur traditionellen Spionagegeschichte ohne unnötige Phantasmagorien), hat aber eine große Schwäche in Form von Bonds Opposition... Kurzum, das Trio aus einem dickbäuchigen amerikanischen Schmuggler, einem sowjetischen Abtrünnigen und einem arischen Halsabschneider (man beachte den Verweis auf den zweiten Connery-Film) ist keine große Sache. Schwach ist auch die "slowakische" Kara (Maryam d'Abo), deren ständiges "Oooh James!!!" mir übel aufstieß. Das Sympathischste an James Bond 007 - Der Hauch des Todes sind der neue Bond (seltsamerweise nicht sehr verführerisch, dafür aber umso konzentrierter auf seinen Job), sehr gute Actionsequenzen mit einigen "Spielereien" von Mr. Q, ordentlich durcheinander geworfene Realitäten und John Glen, der eine tolle Phase hatte und es schaffte, selbst einen mittelmäßigen Plot in ein solides Spektakel zu verwandeln, das Agent 007 keine Schande bereitet... ÜBRIGENS: Hauch des Todes ist der letzte Bond-Film mit einer Originalgeschichte von Fleming... der letzte?

A good old spy movie with the excellent Timothy Dalton in the role of James Bond. Believe it or not, I saw it today for the first time. The movie visits Communist Czechoslovakia, we get a car chase with Public Security (Commie police), takes a look at Tangiers in Morocco and ends up in Afghanistan too, which was a really popular country back in the 1980s too. And who would have said that Jack Sheppard’s father from Lost, John Terry, would play Felix Leiter of the CIA?

The brand-new hero was the right choice for the action-packed 80s, and Timothy Dalton finally gave Bond a solid face of a tough and ruthless action hero of the modern era after a few obvious misses. The Living Daylights is a significant departure from the previous Bond films. Certainly, with its story concept (change of locations), it is very exotic and creative, with scenes from Afghanistan and Slovakia. Unfortunately, it is quite flat in terms of plot, starting with the boring villains and ending with the uneven pacing. The action is solid, Dalton as a tough guy is excellent, but the plot is uninteresting. Nevertheless, this Bond film is quite pioneering and definitely deserves recognition.

In dem Fünf-Sterne-Film James Bond 007 - Lizenz zum Töten hat mir Dalton als Bond besser gefallen. Das ändert aber nichts daran, dass James Bond 007 - Der Hauch des Todes ein sehr gelungener Film ist! Das liegt vor allem an Dalton – dieser Kerl ist einfach sympathisch. Der Film ist nicht besonders witzig (die paar Witze, die es hier gibt, bringen das Publikum nur zum Lächeln). Spannung und eine ziemlich lebendig dargestellte Action bekommt man aber vom Anfang bis zum Ende. Die Musik, die John Barry für diesen Film komponiert hat, gehört zu meinen Lieblingsstücken. Ich möchte die Filmemacher für die Verwandlung von Wien in Bratislava loben. Überall gibt es slowakische Aufschriften, die Menschen sprechen Slowakisch, die slowakische Sprache ist im Radio und im Fernsehen zu hören… Schön. Mein Lieblingsteil ist aber trotzdem die Abschlusspassage in Afghanistan. Kann es sein, dass hier Rambo III abgeschrieben hat, der ein Jahr später gedreht wurde?

The replacement of the tired old man Roger Moore, who needed a stuntman to stand in for him even while drinking champagne, with the amped up aggressor Timothy Dalton took me completely out of my comfort zone. In some ways it really is a throwback to the Connery-esque concept of a butcher dog who pulls women to him by the upper arm, acts like a cold-blooded psychopath in most situations, and the fact that girls are so prone to fall for his charisma is mainly because they're completely stupid. In addition, Dalton still oozes that 80's-style quickness, impatience, impulsiveness, and aggressiveness, which, while making him seem menacing and erratic in action and dramatic scenes, doesn't suit his attempts at gentlemanliness, romance, or witty glossing at all. As Bond overall, though, Living Daylights is a well-conceived adventure with tons of substance. Here we find ourselves in Gibraltar, England, Czechoslovakia, Austria, Morocco, and Afghanistan, despite the fact that this Bond so far has the fewest number of countries in which it was been filmed, with perhaps the exception of Dr. No. I'm quite looking forward to the second and final Bond film with Dalton, but I'm also glad he's going to fuck off after this one, because this take on the protagonist won't carry the entire multi-part series. There were plenty of heroes like that back then.

A secret agent who couldn’t care less about jokes and zingers, and a script that couldn’t care less about sci-fi, and it works. Bond is much more tough and cool, and the film returns to the roots of espionage.

Timothy Dalton is definitely not a bad James Bond, and after the first few minutes I had a feeling that there would be less humor here and that there would be a bit of a darker tone at times. That certainly proved to be true, although it is often just an act and in the end you will still find out how everything really was, and it is somewhat lightened. Nevertheless, there is a certain shift here, especially compared to subsequent Bond films with Brosnan. Dalton created an interesting character, which certainly didn't have to appeal to everyone, but it definitely has charm and the fact that he doesn't try to deliver catchphrases all the time also suited me quite well. Still, his story is too schematic and doesn't really stand out significantly among the others.
