Crimson Peak

Dass Guillermo diesmal nicht nur bei der Produktion geblieben ist, kann man nur so verstehen, dass er zwei Honorare brauchte. Der Film hat einen uninteressanten Stoff und ist einfallslos. Er würde eine Länge von maximal 90 Minuten verdienen. Die Spannung funktioniert in ihm nicht und um die "Wow“-Effekte bemüht er sich mit rückschrittlichen Tricks. Die Ausstattung ist aber wirklich wunderschön, die Besetzung super und das Blut hier und da befriedigend. Der Film entpuppt sich als "twisted romance“. Sein Potenzial hätte aber mehr Möglichkeiten zur Verfügung gestellt. Guillermo sollte sich nicht wünschen, einem breiten Publikum entgegenzukommen. Er müsste auch etwas perverser sein. Schade, dass sich der Schöpfer von einzigartigen Zauberfilmwelten mit so etwas abgibt. (18.10.2015)

Es überrascht mich überhaupt nicht, dass gerade Stephen King Crimson Peak so sehr mag. Der Film basiert nämlich auf einer Idee, die er so oft und gerne vertritt (und die zuletzt in dem ebenfalls ausgezeichneten Film Dream House genutzt wurde), und zwar dass übernatürliche Wesen oft das Letzte sind, wovor man sich fürchten sollte. Viel schlimmer sind manchmal lebende Menschen aus Fleisch und Blut. Guillermo del Toro hat dieses romantische Horrordrama ohne Probleme gedreht. Optisch ist der Film sehr schön (besonders die bunten Farben sind in diesem Genre sehr erfrischend; toll sind aber auch alle historischen Kostüme), in den ruhigen Gesprächsszenen hat es mich wirklich interessiert, wer was zu wem und warum sagt, und bei den härteren und härtesten Szenen (vor denen der Film definitiv nicht zurückschreckt – siehe vor allem das Waschbecken und das Herzinfarkt-Ende) war ich gespannt wie ein Flitzbogen. Kurzum, alles ist so, wie es sein sollte, einschließlich der Schauspielleistungen der drei Hauptdarsteller*innen. Ich muss wieder einmal die großartige Jessica Chastain hervorheben. Nun, das hätten wir. Und jetzt den dritten Hellboy, bitte. (15.10.2015)

I was wary because to me Del Toro is a pretty overrated director, but en the end I loved Crimson Peak for its artistic style – its not very original story notwithstanding – and I’m giving it almost the highest rating. The money put on it can really be seen. Given that right now there aren’t that many big narrative horror films, I don’t think it’d be fair to throw Crimson Peak among the average. The cast is wonderful, finally someone who really knows how to act in a genre film. A proper gothic-horror in the best sense of the word, and I’m sure it will make it to my TOP 10 this year. Gothic horror movie should, by its very nature, contain elements of romance, as well as Gothic novel should contain elements of horror. There is no doubt about that. But this ration must be well-balanced, whether in favor of horror movie with elements of romance or the other way around. Which is exactly where Toro fails. He took half-and-half approach and so it's neither a dog nor a cat, but a kind of hybrid covering two genres, which does not work very well in either department and the ending of "intense snowy Kill Bill final" is not appropriate in terms of genre rules. Audio-visuals are highlighted too much and it lacks a decent story line (it would hardly be enough for a short story), atmosphere, mystery, pace or just a hint of tension between the characters. If del Toro wanted to make the Gothic subgenre more interesting for today's youth, he did not pick his battle very wisely. If his intention was a traditional movie of this subgenre, then he failed terribly. If he tried to pay tribute to Hammer’s horror movies, he did exactly the opposite in a very disrespectful way. In any case, we must admit that the aforementioned audio-visual side of things is really impressive (except for the horrible CGI nonsense...I mean, ghosts and I do not think that in the gothic genre movie it needs to be so obvious) and along with the cast that does their best, is the only thing that makes it bearable. Guillermo del Toro can create an atmosphere and a beautiful scenery; you can’t deny that with any of his movies. But the flow of storytelling can sometimes be an issue and it doesn’t let his movies be perfect experiences.For the first 50 minutes, I thought I’d die of the worst possible movie boredom. It wasn’t until Mia found out that she was on Crimson Peak that it all started to get good. Especially since the atmosphere of the house itself began to show. I must admit, it’s been a long time since I’ve seen two completely different movie halves. While the first half of the movie is awfully boring, the second half is what makes the movie worth watching.
