Paris, 1900. As a little girl, Sonia witnesses the slaughter of her parents by a mysterious man with a steel arm. Years later in Rome, she is hired as a dressmaker at a wax museum owned by Volkoff, a sinister artist who recreates perfect replicas of famous crime scenes. A series of strange deaths in the area has led a young journalist, Andrea, to investigate the mysterious vaults of the museum. Andrea and Sonia are soon plunged into a nightmare as they both learn the secret behind Volkoff's statues and the connection he bears to the steel-armed murderer of Sonia's parents. (Verleiher-Text)

Ein klarer Beweis dafür, dass man auch in den späten 90ern noch qualitativ hochwertigen italienischen Horror finden kann. Wax Mask muss nicht in Untergenre-Schubladen gesteckt werden: Es erinnert am meisten an die alte Schule von Argento, in der das Visuelle das Wichtigste war und erst danach die Atmosphäre, die Musik und die Gore-Szenen. Dass er in der modernen Zeit entstanden ist, verrät eigentlich erst das Ende selbst, das leider nicht bewältigt wurde und im Grunde genommen ein ordentlicher Tritt ins vorherige Geschehen ist. Ansonsten große Zufriedenheit.

A quite accurate cross-section of Italian horror. There’s a bit of 60s gothic, a bit of 70s Giallo, a pinch of gore, nice visuals, awful actors uttering even more awful lines, and general silliness if not stupidity. It’s fun in the details, but as a film overall, it suffers from so many of the typical afflictions of Italian horror cinema (that very few movies in its history have been able to avoid!), that they are just impossible to ignore.

The Italian-French production Wax Mask is primarily based on great, really enjoyable practical effects. Sergio Stivaletti did a great job here, and there are some wonderful scenes. However, some scenes are rather boring, and you wish it would have moved on a bit, although despite that, I did enjoy the movie as it is visually engaging.
