Die Karriere von Hockeyprofi Kabir Khan (Shah Rukh Khan) findet auf ihrem Höhepunkt ein unrühmliches Ende. Nach vielen Jahren kehrt er ins öffentliche Bewusstsein zurück, um als Coach der indischen Nationalmannschaft zu arbeiten. Wohlgemerkt der indischen Damennationalmannschaft. Die besteht eigentlich nur auf dem Papier, denn den Sportlerinnen sind Teamgeist, sportliche Ausdauer und überhaupt die Liebe zum Spiel abhanden gekommen. Doch Khan hat fest vor, sein Team, das ‘Team India’, zum besten der Welt zu machen – und die Weltmeisterschaft zu gewinnen. (Verleiher-Text)

Surprisingly not an Indian picture in terms of form. Maybe a little too un-Indian. This way, the movie is “just" a prime example of a sports genre movie. It contains all the sports clichés, and you know exactly where you are from the very first second. I.e. when, what and how everything is going to happen. But that changes nothing about the fact that it is skillfully filmed, has nice sound engineering and a very good cast. The hockey matches are depicted overall realistically, Shah Rukh Khan is a really nice guy and there is no playing on the emotions. Which I found was a pleasant shock for a Bollywood picture. If it weren’t for a certain sterility in some of the matches and a couple of unbearably long scenes (e.g. the clip sequence after they arrive in Australia is hellish in length), I would have given more stars. Even so, this is easily the highest quality representative of this genre we have seen for many a year. However, that isn’t saying that much, in view of the quality of comparable movies over the past few years.
