Fortysomething

Lawinen von Witzen und ununterbrochene Lachsalven stehen bei dieser Serie nicht an erster Stelle. Sie bemüht sich vor allem darum, so glaubhaft und menschlich wie möglich zu sein. Den verwirrten Helden von Hugh Laurie muss jeder lieb gewinnen. Anna Chancellor, ihre drei Kinder und natürlich Stephen Fry (er ist zwar nur ganz kurz zu sehen, man kann sich auf ihn jedoch immer verlassen) sind aber auch sehr unterhaltsam. Viereinhalb Sterne gebe ich auch für die Herangehensweise der Autoren und die vernünftige Anzahl der Folgen. Sechs einstündige Episoden sind genug – die Ideen sind frisch geblieben und haben sich nicht wiederholt. (17.11.2010)

Each forty-five minute episode has the material for a very funny twenty-minute Britcom. It’s a shame that the quality material is drowned in ballast which, at best, is averagely nondescript and, at worst, exceedingly embarrassing in toilet humor style (a sad example of this is the minutes-long to endless running “joke" about hemorrhoids and the Dutch doctor). Luckily, the actors come to the rescue and the overall impression is considerably improved by the two final episodes where it is exactly how it should have been from the very start - focused on characters, emotionally functional and convincing and also pleasant, poignant and funny.
