Doch die Freundschaft der beiden nun gleich mächtigen Männer leidet bald unter Beckets neuem Amt, da er zum Unwillen Heinrichs seine eigene Auffassung von den Vorrechten der Kirche hat und für diese bedingungslos einsteht.
