In den 60er Jahren haben sie alle noch studiert und versucht, die Welt zu verändern. Alex, früher Mittelpunkt ihrer Clique ist jetzt tot Selbstmord. Nach der Beerdigung treffen sich alle bei Harold und Sarah. Alex hatte mal eine Affäre mit Sarah, als sie schon mit Harold verheiratet war. Meg ist Anwältin und wünscht sich nichts sehnlicher als ein Kind - egal von wem. Ihre erste Wahl fällt auf Nick, aber der kann nicht mehr, wegen einer Verwundung im Vietnam-Krieg. Nick ist zu einem zynischen Junkie und Dealer geworden. Acht alte Freunde verleben ein langes Wochenende voller Depressionen, Leidenschaft, Nostalgie und Aggression... und Meg findet doch noch einen Vater für ihr Kind. A likeable conversational comedy ornamented by very civil and precise performances (thanks to its male ensemble, in particular, it’s one of the most impressive casts of the 80s), several very funny dialogues, and a powerful and very memorable soundtrack. But I feel that Kazdan could have used those great songs to let his hair down a little as a director (as in the opening sequence) and that he could have anchored that easygoing charade of relationships with a stronger and deeper twist. It should get 3*, but those actors, the dramatic feeling, the nice humour, and Meg Tilly and her flexible hot character pull it to a weak 4*.

"I enjoy conversational films that are based on an interesting story, but most importantly, have great actors. And here, perhaps not a single actor was chosen wrong, but they all perfectly fit their roles, both men and women. This is like a film ballad about how life is beautifully fucked up. Either way, it's always worth living because you can laugh."
