Archive 81 (2022)

Englisch Finally got around to watching a Netflix series that actually had some tension and atmosphere, instead of just checking off diversity boxes (looking at you, Geralt). Sure, they went for a multiracial cast, but it made sense in this context. Set in New York, it was a fitting mix (unlike a Slavic fantasy, eh Geralt?). I was particularly drawn to the main character, both in terms of looks and performance, so big props to the casting team. Throughout the series, I was hooked by the quality tension and fantastic atmosphere. Plus, the story was genuinely intriguing, keeping me entertained... until the final episode, which left me a tad disappointed. All in all, I'd say this is a solid win for Netflix. I definitely don't regret the time I invested in it. / Lesson learned: Craving mystery? This series has got you covered. ()

Mystery Signals (2022) (E01)

Englisch After watching the first episode, I'm left pondering what exactly I just witnessed. It felt like a curious blend of a mysterious thriller, a touch of horror, and The Blair Witch Project vibes brought about by the sparse forest and those eerie shots from a handheld camera. But jokes aside, I genuinely have no clue where this whole story is headed. The creators are keeping things shrouded in mystery. However, based on what I've seen thus far, I'm feeling pretty optimistic about it. Since it's just the beginning of the series, I'm giving it my standard three stars, with a tiny plus for the atmosphere. / Lesson learned: Do you know how to play VHS tapes? Lock yourself in and only open to people you know. 3*+ ()

Wellspring (2022) (E02)

Englisch After my second visit to the Archive, I won't claim to have all the answers about where the story is heading. But one thing remains certain: I'm quite enjoying the chosen format. Sure, there are moments where I wish the plot would pick up the pace a bit, but the tension is palpable, and the atmosphere continues to be a success, much like the previous episode. So, after two episodes, I find myself satisfied, and I'm inclined to bump up my rating a tad for this one. / Lesson learned: Unless you're a vandal with an insatiable urge, don't go breaking someone else's plasterboard. Even then, don't break it. 4*- ()

Grauen im Kirchenschiff (2022) (E03)

Englisch The story remains as mysterious as ever, but the creators couldn't resist and decided to give the audience some tidbits of information, allowing the observant and cautious viewer to start piecing things together. I'm still quite pleased with how the story is unfolding, maintaining a subtle yet constant tension and a solid atmosphere throughout. The episode kept me engaged without any dull moments (at least from my perspective). I particularly enjoyed the interactive video recordings they included. / Lesson learned: Even during a home movie projection, it pays to dress appropriately and mind your manners. You never know who might be watching from the other side. ()

Spirit Receivers (2022) (E04)

Englisch I'm not sure if I should keep watching this series. It's starting to make me feel a tad paranoid. I'll be in a conversation and suddenly wonder if it's all real or just in my head. And if it is real, is the other person even alive? And if they are, am I? And if I am, am I just a character in some twisted series? Yep, this show's got me asking a lot of existential questions, and I'm starting to fear it might actually provide some answers. / Lesson learned: Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you. Hinter den Spiegeln (2022) (E05)

Englisch The fifth episode took a bit of a detour from the usual path, diving into a time before mobile phones, apps, and social networks. Instead, we were in a world of VHS, pagers, and social life based on face-to-face interactions (imagine that! Even sex was often an offline affair!). It's no wonder I can picture younger viewers googling the strange gadgets featured here. After what feels like ages, I feel a certain advantage. Once again, I was far from disappointed. As the creators unveil more of the big picture, they manage to keep the tension just right, and the atmosphere gets a solid thumbs up from me. / Lesson learned: Don't hesitate to use modern technology to unravel the mysteries of the past. ()

The Circle (2022) (E06)

Englisch After that last quirky retro move, the creators are back to their original storytelling style, and I'm genuinely intrigued to see how the remaining episodes unfold. It's becoming clear that we're steadily marching towards the finale, and I can't wait to see where it leads. What's struck me most is that, up to this point, I haven't encountered a single episode that felt like filler, just there to stretch out the plot to meet some episode quota. They haven't resorted to those tactics yet, and why would they? The series still has so much to offer. / Lesson learned: Steer clear of moldy houses, unless you're a junky. ()

Der Fährmann (2022) (E07)

Englisch The leap back to 1924 turned out to be quite the success for the creators. Sure, the episode didn't keep me on the edge with constant tension or a grim atmosphere, but I thoroughly enjoyed the journey to the root of all the troubles. Finally, the big picture came into focus, and it seems like we're inevitably hurtling toward a grand finale where not just two worlds, but all three time axes, will collide. At least, that's my hope. / Lesson learned: When someone asks if you can contain a whole new world within you, the correct answer is definitely a no. ()

Was im Verborgenen liegt (2022) (E08)

Englisch Initially, I thought the weaker moments might pop up in the penultimate episode, but it happened in the finale. It's a shame because there was no shortage of tension or atmosphere, but what's the use when the script throws its own rules out the window and ends up tripping over itself? I feel like a well-crafted series deserved a strong finish, but it seems the creators had a different idea in mind. It left me a bit frustrated, honestly. I was tempted to give it just two stars, but I decided to cut it some slack. / Lesson learned: Don't mess with the demon. 3*- ()
