Bibiane undergoes an abortion, her business activities in the family chain of boutiques end in disaster, and on top of that, she inadvertently runs over a pedestrian, who then dies of his injuries. This existential story full of paradoxes, incorporating all kinds of mystical, symbolic, comic, and romantic scenes, has an unusual collective narrator: Norwegian fish being distributed to Montreal restaurants. Fische haben uns Menschen halt eben durchschaut. Denis Villeneuve drehte dieses existenzialistische Drama mit einer verrückten romantischen Linie und stellt damit quasi ein Spiegel dem Monty Pythons Sinn des Lebens, wo ebenfalls ein Fischschwarm über die Fragen der menschlichen Existenz philosophierten. Eine interessant strukturierte Geschichte mit einer Prise schwarzen Humors und eine Show, die sicherlich nicht jedermanns Sache ist.

The terribly long exposition wallowing in the main character's depression is a bit too much for my taste, but the moment Villeneuve starts moving the plot through the broken time lines, I was hooked. The bizarre tangle of events, coincidences and fateful encounters is further embellished by the narrator, who is the fish being butchered. Brilliant acting and utterly realistic. The weirdest romantic film in a very long time.
