My Fellow Citizens (2019) (Serie)

Englisch I watched this a year ago and then threw it away because it didn't interest me at all. Only now it's come up on Netflix and I (for some reason I feel like I should finish watching everything) picked it up. It wasn't as terrible as it struck me after the first two episodes, but it wasn't a hit either – though I liked the theme song best of all (it reminded me a lot of the 1st opening from Durarara!!). Certainly, Siwon is as watchable as ever, he knows how to put on the right face to convince the viewer that the character is feeling what he's supposed to be feeling at that moment. Even so, it doesn't save the series. The main villain sucked, his wife as a single person sucked too, as a couple she was already only acceptable. The series is boring, overdone, weirdly complicated and naive, but it has the occasional interesting scene, the occasional good scene, the occasional funny scene. What I liked were the cuts to one group ordering food, the other dealing with politics, and the cuts are done in such a way that the character dealing with politics sounds like she's commenting on their food choices. I have to admit that was original and funny. There's so little of it, though, that it's not really worth the time spent unless you're a total Siwon fan. 50%.

Hospital Playlist (2020) (Serie)

Englisch Wow, see how the Koreans can do it, too – an enjoyable real-life series, no exaggerated love triangles, no power struggles for the professor position, no bullying. Just people working together, trying to get along and save lives. Plus, the five friends are cast with great actors, so it's something to watch. On the plus side but minus side as well, there are a lot of characters, so in the beginning the viewer may have a hard time getting their bearings; it's just better to pay close attention. Another minus for me was the length of the episodes, some are so long that I felt it didn't flow at all; although the opposite is true, the plot managed to jump around well. You just have to be attentive when watching. On the other hand it pays off, you get the everyday life in the hospital focused not on medical procedures but on life in and out of the hospital, although it can be very hard to escape at times. You also get some very nice humor, nothing fake or out of place, but very natural humor between friends and family. Plus each episode ends with a group song, which I always looked forward to. It's not nerve-wracking, it's not rushed, but it jumps around at times and can make you laugh and cry. Natural. With an open ending like life itself. A strong 4 stars.

Honnódži hotel (2017)

Englisch It's been said before, but this is really a film that wants to impress the viewer emotionally (not with the originality of the story, not with its effects, not with the sophistication of its characters) and from what I can see, it succeeds quite well. It's got the search for oneself and one's goals or dreams, it's got time travel, it's got Oda Nobunaga and his one day, it's got pathos but not an unbearable amount of it, it's got the endearing Ayase Haruka whose secretly impulsive character is "not afraid". It's certainly nice to know who Oda Nobunaga was, preferably even more so what is said about his close comrades in arms to make the experience all the more peppy. It's clear to me that anyone who doesn't know Japanese history, or at least the Sengoku period, won't enjoy it as much. I had fun because of it, it was funny. And for a Japanese film, I found it strangely not overlong. I don't know who this movie is for, but it can be rewarding.

Poteči (2012)

Englisch For me, this was a lovely one-shot. You're sort of thrown into the plot, knowing absolutely nothing about these people, but over time you find out what their motivations are and it comes together nicely until it culminates in a baseball game. I thought Hamada Gaku was very good here, playing what is basically a chamber character with a lot of emotional movement that bubbles and bubbles, until it finally fizzles out in a touching way. He's seconded by Omori as the mysterious man who for some reason keeps meeting Hamada's character, and Kimura Fumino as a grizzled and rather peculiar Japanese woman with her heart where it should be. It's an ordinary little film, but it warmed my heart terribly, even though it confused me at first.

Tokyo Ghoul S (2019)

Englisch For me, a completely unnecessary film. No one is going anywhere, nothing new is really even addressed, it just is. It doesn't even really have an interesting plot – someone wants to eat, and that someone wants to eat Kaneki... and that's it, folks. The only thing I give a thumbs up to is Kubota Masataka; not so much for his acting, but you can tell he's been practicing and is kind of more fluid. If you found the previous film mediocre, you'll find this one below average and perhaps a waste of time. For me, it certainly is.

Galih dan Ratna (2017)

Englisch An ordinary film about love at first sight. Both of them are likable, he does some great acting. The film doesn't bring anything new to the table, it's just really minimalistic that way. There are no big twists, it's actually pleasantly ordinary. At least I learned how to do it without the tape being played. Not that it's of any use to me right now, but maybe someday... it'll be the last, most important question on Who Wants to be a Millionaire?.

Kingudamu (2019)

Englisch Vavča said it, too – the subject matter to be processed is so vast that condensing it into a two-hour film doesn't do it much good. It makes it very difficult for the viewer to find their way to the characters because they don't have enough time to get to know them, to understand their motivations and history. There are hints here and there, but they don't make you (or at least me) root for the characters. Of course the King's brother was a slimeball, so it was easy to root for his failure, his death, but otherwise? Not interested. Obviously there's a big world to conquer, characters who still have something to say, but this is basically just an introduction and a pretty truncated one at that. Given that it's set in China, there's obviously jumping up and down during the fights, to the point of flying, and while the Chinese are good at these movies, the Japanese – at least here – still have some catching up to do. It didn't quite fit. I would have liked to see it go deeper. I would have liked less of a shouting Yamazaki, because he's not very good at that type of character. Basically, his best performance was at the end when he was staring at the sword. I'm not saying he was terrible, though; just that the character didn't really fit him. On the other hand, Yoshizawa Ryo did a good job in a double role. He was perfect as the king. Anyway, anyone who likes Sato Shinsuke's work will be happy here; it's definitely him. The whole film is mediocre – the story, the characters, the fights. But I bet the original subject matter is pretty good.

Nur die halbe Geschichte (2020)

Englisch I was a little worried about the girl falling in love with a girl and it being awkward, but I ended up being pleasantly surprised because it wasn't like that at all. Quite the opposite. Mostly it wasn't even about gender at all, it was more about relationships between people, building friendships, discovering yourself, and doing it in a very comfortable and natural way. It was good to watch, there was no cringe, it went along nicely. It's a nice show from high school in the middle of nowhere.

Downsizing (2017)

Englisch A grey movie with a great idea (shrinking people) that actually ended up being something secondary. You can tell a story like that even in a normally large setting. It will be colorless the same way. A classic about how an internally dissatisfied man comes to happiness, all it takes is for his wife to kick him in the ass and for him to find an Eastern European friend... 50%.

Karakai Jozu no Takagi-san - Season 2 (2019) (Staffel)

Englisch I confess that I put this on Netflix and didn't notice that it's not the first season, but actually the second. That's why I was quite surprised that this relatively uninteresting show got such high ratings. But about halfway through, I finally noticed "S2" and it was clear. I disliked Nishikata, and Takagi as well. It was the same thing over and over again; how Takagi seems to be trying to embarrass Nishikata, but at the same time, he's pretty brutal in trying to pick him up, but he defends himself quite successfully with his bluntness. Normally I watch a 12-part anime in about a week; this took me a few months and I had to force myself to watch it. But I don't like unfinished series; so it's finally over, I can breathe a sigh of relief and quickly forget about it. The first season is supposedly better, but unfortunately I won't be trying it.
