Bridget Jones - Am Rande des Wahnsinns (2004)

Englisch A terrible bullshit film that's all about nothing, and aside from a lot of absurdities culminating in a Thai prison and a bunch of awkwardness, it also has some good jokes, the brilliant Hugh Grant, and a likeable Bridget. btw I really don't get the odes to Colin Firth, wherever the guy appears he has the same dry aristocratic expression and as far as I counted, only twice in this film does he manage to scrunch his face into a fake smile and that in itself is calling to heaven. Definitely a good candidate for the next installment of The Terminator.

Chucky's Baby (2004)

Englisch Hahaha that was just incredible. I watched it at the Brutal Assault horror festival booth and you can imagine what it looked like when Britney Spears died. Otherwise, the movie has some really strong jokes and Chucky is truly brilliant. I'm glad the filmmakers understood that they couldn't take a movie about a murdering doll seriously.

Collateral (2004)

Englisch A film where I stopped equating "digital camera" with "evil". Mann is great with it. On the other hand, I really didn't like the fact that people were dusting themselves off after being hit by a bullet instead of politely bleeding.

Das geheime Fenster (2004)

Englisch A surprisingly clever, quite innovative, and very well made... uh.... psychological comedy. Seriously...

Das Phantom der Oper (2004)

Englisch I gagged on my own blood. But I'm afraid there was nothing else that could be done with Webber's script (Andrew Lloyd himself is thrilled with the film). The Pilcher-esque script, the awful, pathetic music, and those lyrics, for goodness sake. An ordeal comparable to watching a two and a half hour concert of Nightwish, Within Temptation, or a similar haunted castle where the actors have to change their clothes every ten minutes. Knowing that the film is faithful to the original musical and was worked on directly with Webber, I vow to keep a respectful distance from this world.

Der Manchurian Kandidat (2004)

Englisch Given that I was expecting a formally conservative political thriller, this paranoid sicko raised creases in my face. A fantastically shot drama comparable in every way to Jacob's Ladder. But here it also hits hard, because what worked in the 50s might work today on a more metaphorical level, reflecting even more overtly American wounds than the conflict half of people have forgotten nowadays anyway. After all, every politician has a trigger chip and without necessarily needing to drill into his skull.

Der Polarexpress (2004)

Englisch It's a risk of technology-obsessed directors that they occasionally choose that proverbial Cimrman-esque dead end, and Zemeckis has been looking for a way back out of it for three films. Perhaps the most distinctive attribute of The Polar Express is "scary". When a bunch of dead-faced chefs burst into the carriage and start splashing chocolate all over everyone, I believe it was meant to be debauched and funny. I hugged my knees in horror and tried to maintain my sanity, eyes bulging. As for the experience with the then groundbreaking facial-motion-capture technology, there in particular the darker-skinned girl's facial expressions reminded me of the 2011 video game "L.A. Noire", which featured the same technology at the time, only used in favor of an interactive concept. In retrospect, this proves how terribly fast digital technology ages and how much it dehumanizes the overall result. In films with animatronic models, masks, and real sets, there is a certain unwritten contract with the viewer, who likes to be fooled by artificial things when they see the long work of strange hands and original visions behind them. But for most, the digitally created image is really just an abstract process in which you cannot admire the individual technological aspects, but only the whole. Here in the best moments it merely strips the subject of all tangibility and poetry; in the worst moments, it looks like nightmare fuel.

Der Untergang (2004)

Englisch Exhausting, authentic, daring, brilliantly acted and directed, decadent, one hell of a film.

Die Unglaublichen (2004)

Englisch Oh yeah, it's a stylish ride, surprisingly oriented imho more toward an adult audience, although there are a few infantile jokes. The characters are likable, the animation is clever, I laughed a few times ("I declare war against peace and happiness", "...and he’s got me on a platter, and he starts monologuing about how feeble I am compared to him, how inevitable my defeat is, the world will soon be his...") and the action is cool. A strong and unwavering four stars...

Dylan Moran: Monster (2004) (Fernsehfilm)

Englisch "She was attractive in the way that other women would have said of her: ‘Well, she is attractive in an obvious way.’ Interestingly, a lot of the women who say that about other women tend to have hidden their own attraction so well ... that you do feel like throwing them a bread roll." This guy is a god.
