Atomic Blonde (2017)

Englisch Action goddess Charlize Theron in a spy action thriller. If I were to compare this film to John Wick, Wick is obviously closer to my heart, Atomic Blonde slightly lacks drive and the plot isn't entertaining and gripping enough to glue the viewer to their seat, yet there are scenes that will make me remember it. Definitely worth mentioning are the fights, of which there are quite a few and all of them are properly gritty and perfectly shot (the highlight being a 10 minute action scene in a building culminating in a car chase that had the whole cinema holding their breath). Also nice, especially for men, is Sofia Boutella, who has a passionate fling with Charlize Theron, seeing two beautiful actresses in bed will please any film fan. All in all, an enjoyable action ride that slightly lacks pace and disappoints with a weaker script, but the action makes it definitely worth seeing. 75%

Annabelle 2 (2017)

Englisch David Sandberg is becoming another guarantee of quality, because his sequel to Annabelle takes on a new dimension and is certainly nothing to be ashamed of. From start to finish, a solid, intense two-hour haunting with great music, solid camera work, innovative haunted attractions and solid scares. I also liked the decent performances, especially from the kids, the great retro atmosphere, the two Easter eggs and the nice callback to the first episode at the end. What disappointed me, though, is the finale, the weakest part of the whole film. The film is more or less intensely haunting throughout, but always in one wave, you don’t even realise that the finale is already there, because compared to the previous attractions it is no different and doesn't get any more intense, which is a bit disappointing. I give a big thumbs up for the chair raiding on the stairs and the small moving elevator, which created a great atmosphere. Surprisingly there was room for a bit of gore, which again I commend. So I'm satisfied, Annabelle 2 definitely won’t be missing among the this year’s top and for ghost story fans must be a high standard. PS: The scarecrow is cool and calls for a spin-off. 80%

El bar - Frühstück mit Leiche (2017)

Englisch Alex de La Iglesia from Spain comes again with an interesting project. His peak work (The Last Circus) remains unsurpassed, but The Bar, his latest film is better than his previous Witching and Bitching. The whole film takes place more or less in one place, a bar, where a group of strangers clash (I love this in movies!¨). Anyone who steps out of the bar is mercilessly shot in the head, the question is why. I will not give you the answer, you will find out only in the film. Anyway, it's nicely shot, Blanca Suarez spends more than half of the film in a bra and garter, there is some humour and the finale is pleasantly suspenseful, so I'm satisfied, I had a good time. 75%

It Stains the Sands Red (2016)

Englisch A new zombie flick that has received rave reviews from festivals and I liked it too. It really is a very original zombie film, where the main character wanders the desert and is chased by an annoying zombie who wants to eat her at all costs. The protagonist is a girl who is constantly dropping wisecracks. The film is very funny, nicely shot, bloody at times and there's even a rape, which I haven't seen in a zombie movie in a long time. The funniest thing for me was when she wanted to feed the zombie with a bloody tampon. Towards the end it starts to go in a different direction, not everyone will be happy with that, but I had a good time. 70%

The Osiris Child (2016)

Englisch It was such a mix of everything that I wasn't even amused. Very little action for my taste, almost no blood, visually passable. An ok B movie for TV on Sunday afternoon with coffee and cookies. 50%.

Dunkirk (2017)

Englisch Christopher Nolan's back, but he didn't make me too happy this time. To pick a war movie and make it PG-13 is a big mistake for me. After the carnage of Hacksaw Ridge this is very restrained and clean, I missed the filth, the dismembered bodies, the screaming and the guts, instead we get ticking clocks, ships and fighter planes. It bothered me that there is no main character or villain, which is a crucial thing for me, something that no film should miss. Emotionally it left me absolutely cold. But I don’t want only to criticize, I must praise the great audiovisual aspect, the fighter raids had their charm, Tom Hardy was excellent, Hans Zimmer's music nicely supported the atmosphere and the shots of the open sea and sunken ships were nice. On the plus side, the pace is fast, you don't have to wait long for things to happen, but there was a notable scene missing that I would like to watch again in the future. I got it about half and half, I won't be rushing into another screening.70%

Shot Caller (2017)

Englisch A perfect prison movie with Jamie Lannister and the Punisher! Shot Caller is told in flashbacks and shows us the main character's life after his release from prison and also the life he lived in prison, all beautifully intertwined in a very raw and gritty package. The prison riot and the final scene are the highlights, suspense accompanies the whole film and there is no shortage of entertainment and also a few twists and turns. A great, slick film full of tough guys. 80%.

Jue zhan shi shen (2017)

Englisch An excellent spectacle and for gourmets even more so. From a gastronomic point of view, the film is one of the top in its genre and hardly finds competition. The actors are likeable, the story has drive and heart, and the duel between the chef awarded three Michelin stars and the chef from an ordinary small restaurant was perfect. The style with which the main character cut the salmon or boned the duck from the inside to keep the skin intact will stay in my mind for a long time. An experience that you perceive with your eyes and palate. 85%

Killing Ground (2016)

Englisch Australian forest hixploitation flick that is so naturally authentic it gives you chills. After a prolonged drought, we have something that definitely deserves attention again. The film is beautifully shot, introduces the characters, both good and bad, nicely, the tension works well and the execution in the woods is one of the most intense scenes in recent times. The only disappointment is that the film doesn’t offer much in the way of gore, but the rawness comes across decently. Another big upside is the unusual narrative style with two different timelines that intertwine and make it more interesting. I had a nice time, decent stuff. 70%

Planet der Affen: Survival (2017)

Englisch The best trilogy since The Dark Knight? Undoubtedly! The final installment of the trilogy is much more of a depressing drama than an action spectacle, which is a bit of a bummer (I think the conclusion of a trilogy would deserve a pumped-up action inferno), but the upside is that even without "war" the apes work flawlessly. The CGI is a few levels above anything else we've seen so far, the emotions work better here than in any emotional blackmail film, and the pace hurtles forward faster than a draft horse. Another big upside is the villain, played by Woody Harrelson, who fits the bill perfectly. By the end the whole theater was crying, the woman behind me was considering running away as the emotional fit she was experiencing was too much for her. An emotional experience. 90%
