Dune: Part Two (2024)

Englisch With a bit of exaggeration, you could say of this colossal film it is about the USSR fighting the Arabs for oil and the Americans pulling the strings. Dune: Part Two is the pinnacle of modern big screen in every way. From the engaging storytelling, to the sound design, the fantastic sets, the visual effects, the sound and Hans Zimmer's beauty. Hands down, this a brilliant job by the filmmakers and the actors. A monumental epic that for years was considered unfilmable has succeeded for the second time. Everybody says it can't be done, until somebody does it. And that somebody is Denis Villeneuve. The event of the year – the riding of the worm and the duel between Chalamet and Butler are absolute cinematic delights. And the whiners who will complain about the final third and who knows what else are not worth addressing.

Yellowstone - Tag der Auferstehung (2019) (Folge)

Englisch For a long time it seems to be the high standard we are used to, but the last few minutes take it to another dimension and remind us of the toughest "civil" violence, which we can enjoy in the sense that the brutality is still within acceptable limits, but at the same time the scene is naturalistic, dynamic and most importantly extremely gripping. Sheridan is in his element, like a fish in water.

Extraction 2 (2023)

Englisch If Chris Hemsworth is the successor to 1990s Sly and Arnold, I say yes, thumbs up, because that is exactly how straightforward Extraction 2 is. And that's why it is subjectively a notch higher than the overly mythological and monumental John Wick: Chapter 4. Hemsworth gets his hands dirty, bleeds, burns, shoots down helicopters, kills with a screwdriver, and at least half of it is in one take with no cuts. Anyone whining about the bad visual effects should realize that this is not an A-list blockbuster going into theaters and costing 150-200 million, but it’s made for TV and costing barely a third of that. 9 times out of 10 there are more breathtaking scenes than most genre films will allow you to dream of, in fact I haven't seen anything this intense in a very long time – this is how The Grey Man should have looked like! An exemplary tribute to the craft of action, a masterful work of cinematography, editing and fight choreography. Come on, let’s have a threequel because Hemsworth is king.

The Crown - Mou Mou (2022) (Folge)

Englisch Subjectively, the best episode of the whole series so far, which is almost entirely dedicated to the tireless visionary Mohammed Al Fayed. In one episode there is a great summary of the key moments of his life, the most important transactions that he managed, for example, the brilliantly staged scene with the purchase of the Ritz hotel and the Harrods shopping mall. At the same time, the episode focuses on his complicated relationship with his son and interestingly portrays his special bond with his butler. A slumlord billionaire who managed to build himself up and influence the movements on the chessboard of the English elite of the time. The dating scene with Diana is fantastically acted, light-hearted and fun. Cherry on top.

Titanic (1997)

Englisch Watching Titanic again after so many years, in a remastered 4K and 3D version is a truly sensual experience. All the more so when you watch this 25-year-old opus and realise that a better film will be hard to find in cinemas this year. Titanic resonates even more intensely when its screening is preceded by trailers for Quantumania, parallel universes, digital fests of all kinds, in short, recyclates that either make your head explode or your eardrums pop. But as soon as the old familiar melody plays after 20 minutes of trailer hell and the black and white "old" intro with the silhouette of the ship comes on, I am in my element. In 20 seconds, James Cameron produces more emotion in two cuts than all those future supercomics combined. Titanic is a celebration and homage to modern filmmaking, a benchmark of cinema. It stuns with its breathtaking fragility, old-world wisdom, palette of iconic scenes and colossal epic. The pinnacle of world cinema and deservedly one of the best pieces of all time. One of the few that has avoided ageing.

For All Mankind - Die Augen der Welt (2019) (Folge)

Englisch There are some moments that are so over the top that at times it looks like the creators were inspired by Michael Bay, but 95% of the time it still retains a nice human dimension and good depth of characters. The last episode of the first season is just spectacular enough and balanced perfectly in other aspects.

For All Mankind - In den Abgrund (2019) (Folge)

Englisch Simple, straightforward, visually breathtaking, factually true to reality – space porn. The only thing that dilutes it a bit and spoils the thrilling experience are the scenes that take place "at home". They're important to the ongoing development of the characters, but they crumble the intensity of Shackleton's brilliant drama a bit.

Scenes from a Marriage (2021) (Serie)

Englisch A unique achievement. A minimalist, evocative, authentic probe into the heart of a toxic relationship, the distorted emotions and warped personal values of the two leads. Scenes from a Marriage is not only notable for its naturalistically staged emotional scenes and impassioned dialogue, but above all for the fact that it tactfully and subtly takes neither side of the protagonists. Both of them are naked (sometimes literally) in front of the camera, fully displaying their emotional fragility and anger, tears and laughter, love and hate. From a third-person perspective, disarmingly rewarding and true to life. Sometimes it's extremely difficult to "just let go" and Hagai Levi's miniseries tells that story as exquisitely as few. Emotional hell to the sound of monotonous music and static shots of the snowy front yard. Piece of art.

Scenes from a Marriage - Die Analphabeten (2021) (Folge)

Englisch An all-out emotional inferno that picks up a fiendish pace at the beginning and just when it looks like it's going to keep it up for the whole episode, giving the viewer no room to breathe, the creators kick it up another gear for the second half. Breathtaking, phenomenal, unique achievement are some ways to describe it. One of the most complex hour-long relationship dramas ever made.

Scenes from a Marriage - Poli (2021) (Folge)

Englisch Breathtaking dialogue improvisation in the director's tightly grasped concept of analysing the breakdown of a relationship. Precisely delivered by both leads, the emotions bubble non-stop and when it gets to be too much, Hagai Levi intersperses it with some brief camera shots of a snowy cold Boston, enhanced by a depressingly cut single-note musical theme. Purist, simple, maximally effective.
