Die Liga der außergewöhnlichen Gentlemen (2003)

Englisch The most interesting and appealing thing about the whole movie is precisely the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. The characters are interesting, but unfortunately poorly developed and with weak psychology. The visual style is quite over-the-top, yet some action scenes are breathtaking (the opening in the hotel, the library) and Sean Connery is fortunately back in fantastic form. Unfortunately, the plot is quite weak and in the end, everything collapses like Venice under by several kilograms of dynamite. I don't really care about the submarine in narrow canals, but there are already quite a few plot clichés. Dr. Hyde was also extremely poorly done, and he's not even close to being the Hulk. As a pure action caper, it's too grandiose and theatrical, as a big epic comic-book adaptation, it's too linear and narratively inadequate. A frantic mix of everything, but solid as undemanding entertainment.

Die Liste (2010) (Fernsehfilm)

Englisch An unexpectedly solid TV movie, which, apart from the fabulous Jennifer Love Hewitt, offers an interesting insight into the nooks and crannies of "massage" parlours and a quite realistic view of a totally broke American family trying to survive, with the individual crisis life decisions resulting from it. It has no higher ambitions, and that's where it's fine. A solid pilot for a series.

Die Maske des Zorro (1998)

Englisch Dynamic direction, an action-packed story, devilishly fast pace, beautiful old-fashioned atmosphere, excellent costumes and sets, incredibly well-shot fights and action scenes, superbly mixed sound, graceful camera work, evocative and atmospheric music by James Horner, beautiful romance, mature appearance, lightning-fast editing, a charismatic Antonio Banderas, an uncompromising antagonist in Stuart Wilson, the embodiment of beauty Catherine Zeta-Jones, and on top of that, the great Anthony Hopkins himself, whom I happen to admire the most. Should I continue? It is precisely that stunning Hollywood entertainment of the 1990s that has forever grown close to my heart.

Die Mühlenprinzessin (1994)

Englisch A modern Czech fairytale classic. Troška kept himself on a leash, an excellent Blanarovičová, unrecognizably under the make-up, and traditional storytelling of Czech fairytales. Unlike many other "classics", The Watermill Princess can be watched with a pinch of self-loathing even after several years, but only in a sentimental mood during the Christmas holidays.

Die Mumie (1999)

Englisch Stephen Sommers is very good at this kind of films. This one has a reasonable mix of action, humor, and tension, which unfortunately is sometimes overly disjointed and mainly quite boring. The onslaught of visual effects and action scenes is truly impressive, and Jerry Goldsmith's music is beautifully atmospheric. But The Mummy is ultimately a one-time affair, as I have no desire to watch it again. The Egyptian mythology is distorted and the main villain, Arnold Vosloo, is quite an annoying caricature. However, the chemistry between the actors is excellent. Both Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are great and interact excellently on screen. Pity about the deficiencies in the direction and especially the scriptwriting, as visually the film is practically perfect.

Die Mumie: Das Grabmal des Drachenkaisers (2008)

Englisch Colorful crap from time to time plays on an ambitious and visual effects-loaded note of a wannabe, failed blockbuster. All the atmosphere of the previous parts is gone and the watchable mix of action, romance, and adventure has been replaced by computer-generated avalanches, werewolves, the Terracotta Army, and the boring clown Jet Li. Those who expect an epic sequel will be disappointed. The wiscracks don't work, there is no story, and technically the worst by a long shot. Rob Cohen did exactly what was expected, he messed it up nicely.

Die Mumie kehrt zurück (2001)

Englisch Solid ancient adventure, very similar in concept to the first installment, with lots of action, a fast pace, and a solid cast. However, for my taste it is even more cluttered, overwrought, and hyped than the first one, and here it bothered me quite a bit. Yet, one cannot deny the creativity and decent skills of the director. This time, I was pleasantly surprised by Arnold Vosloo, whom I still associate with a tough guy from Hard Target. The scorpion ending was downright silly, but considering the film's practically nonexistent ambitions, it can be endured. To have fun and let go, that's the basic motto.

Die Passion Christi (2004)

Englisch Those brutal scenes that everyone take dso much about weren't really that terrible. Rather than being naturalistic, they were just very bloody. In terms of craftsmanship, it is again precise, but that is not new for Mel Gibson. As for the content, there is nothing left but to describe it as controversial. The music is breathtaking.

Die Piratenbraut (1995)

Englisch Arguably the best modern pirate film. Likeable, compact, with plenty of humor and self-parody, it definitely does not bring shame to the genre and easily surpasses the highly acclaimed Pirates of the Caribbean in practically every aspect. Perhaps Renny Harlin softened a bit and Cutthroat Island is not as striking and bloody as his previous films, but this does not change the fact that the action scenes are still solid, perfectly staged, and appropriately dynamic. Geena Davis is fine, and Frank Langella is absolutely brilliant, his lines are unforgettable. The final part is made up of a unique musical score, definitely one of the gems of film music. If you have a sense of perspective, a good mood, and aren’t critical, you can thoroughly enjoy this film.

Die purpurnen Flüsse (2000)

Englisch The European feeling is nice, but it doesn't always fit. The Crimson Rivers has a solid atmosphere, a good acting duo, but a very predictable plot and the visual aesthetic could also be a bit different.
