Conan (2011)

Englisch One of those few movies where it’s clear that it would be a low-quality experience already from the trailer, which is silly but perhaps more entertaining than the entire film. The only things that stand out are the action scene with the little boy in the forest, right at the beginning, the decent production design, and that's about it. The music is all sorts of random – the composer must have thought that putting fast strings together would mean monumental, epic, and action-packed music; unfortunately, he got a bit confused. The actors are nothing special either. It shows pure commercialism and no passion or love for classics. And that's what buries the whole project.

In Time - Deine Zeit läuft ab (2011)

Englisch It's not it. The poster and main characters are romantic to some extent, but In Time is a disgracefully wasted opportunity. Andrew Niccol came up with a captivating and highly original story, but unfortunately, he completely fails in other aspects. It's not that I expect flying saucers or a million-person battle, but perhaps just a bit more polished visuals, more fatefulness, more dynamic action, more exuberant artistic stylization, and definitely fewer unfinished plotlines. Buying and stealing time is nice, but if you think about it, it's clear that if someone could gain time just by touching someone else, everyone would have killed each other a long time ago and certainly wouldn't wait in front of a time bank offering thirty percent loans. They could have also done without a certain type of car for the wealthy class, and the retro police cars don't fit in there either – there are simply too many of those things. But to not just criticize, the million year concept is cool, there are occasionally thrilling scenes, Justin Timberlake is good as always, and Cillian Murphy is phenomenal as always. In my opinion, Niccol would have been better as the screenwriter, not the director.

Ironclad – Bis zum letzten Krieger (2011)

Englisch Outrageous carnage. I feel that after Solomon Kane, James Purefoy has devoted himself to the historical “off road” genre for life. That’s not bad, his hero has depth, he's not a fool like in the 2011 remake of Conan the Barbarian, a minimum vocabulary is not harmful at all, quite the opposite. The excellent chemistry between the lead actors is definitely worth mentioning. Well, it can be done without a million words. The action is okay (within the budget), there are several truly wholesome details like a person split in half, and an unusually grand and monumental music for a rather intimate affair with a British feeling (thumbs up). Paul Giamatti overacts and Kate Mara is charming (thumbs up as well). Perhaps a bit more flashy than effective, but in my opinion, it exploits everything that could be done within the genre.

In der Lüge gefangen (2010)

Englisch I didn’t expect such a travesty. The cast is decent, unfortunately only on the poster. Otherwise, it's average, or rather, below average (Milla Jovovich). A film without energy, without emotions, without any significant scenes. Robert "sit the fuck down" De Niro hasn't been lucky with good projects lately. John Curran is not a good filmmaker.

Wer ist Hanna? (2011)

Englisch Insane. Fans of the American grand style and posing can watch Bourne or Mission Impossible 3. They are similarly “kinetic” films, but they are clear, linear, and much easier to grasp. Hanna’s problem is that it is sometimes on the verge of a paranoid thriller, which often turns into a hard-hitting action film interspersed with sci-fi elements. It has a British feeling, which I don't really like deep down.

Drive (2011)

Englisch A stunning minimalist film, a unique experience for lovers of a blend of bearable art-modernism and uncompromising realistic rawness. I would devour everything about the main character, the music perfectly underscores it, and the action is uncompromising. Overall, a very meticulously styled film, whose creators have a knack for feeling and aesthetics and know exactly what and how to do it.

Sinners and Saints (2010)

Englisch Johnny Strong is awesome! The action is uncompromising and the overall vibe of the film is insane. Something so off the rails hasn't been seen in a long time. The realities of the big city seem to not exist, everything looks like one big fighting arena where police officers, blacks, gangsters, drug dealers, lunatics, junkies, skinheads, hired killers, etc. are pitted against each other. An excellent way to unwind.

The Tourist (2010)

Englisch I have the feeling that all the new additions to the genre of “super smart and cool sleek film” are just roses on the grave. What Ocean’s Eleven and similar films started in the late 90s and the early 00s, gets buried after about a decade with pieces like The Stranger. The Actors are chosen based on their looks, the luxury hotel, and the wealthy and arrogant style is here because there is a lack of a cohesive script and quality direction, and the setting of Venice is indeed magical, but if it were, for example, Kiev or Bratislava, it would be boring. This is really exhausted, let's move on.

Der Plan (2011)

Englisch Matt Damon almost forgot what it's like to have the role of an honest nice guy. Fortunately, he definitely hasn't forgotten the art of acting, and it was mainly him, along with the excellent and natural Emily Blunt, who carried this peculiar film forward. Excellent dialogues, screenplay, and dramaturgy, some of the sci-fi elements may be unnecessary and the overall philosophy of the film is slightly over the top. But it is satisfactory within the realm of intelligent and undemanding popcorn entertainment, satisfaction. It is certainly a creation that, although fairly original in terms of premise, will not have a specific audience, but will captivate a wide range of dumb people. In most things, it is very uncontroversial and organized. I see it as a slight flaw, but fans of dumb movies will appreciate it.

Planet der Affen: Prevolution (2011)

Englisch Phenomenal gem, polished in every aspect. A film with visual effects that are used exactly in the right places and details (the ape faces and emotions), excellent and dynamic action, captivating drama, a surprising intimate touch. Those expecting big-budget action with millions of apes battling the human population will be disappointed. The new apes are going in a completely different direction, significantly more sophisticated and entertaining. It's still popcorn and a film made mainly for “entertainment”, but the inventiveness and enthusiasm of the people behind it for the material cannot be overlooked. Thumbs up, excellent work, and a film that truly entertains from beginning to end.
