Suspiria from Luca Guadagnino is a different film than Suspiria from Dario Argento. It is in fact a good film. Actually, I think it's a shame that the filmmakers tried to ride the coattails of the legendary film at all costs, because this new film deserves to stand on its own, to have its own story, not to be promoted as a remake. It's good enough to pull it off without this crutch, which kind of undermines the great legacy Argento has.

The American horror film Dracula's Daughter primarily focuses on the theme of a curse and how its bearer is definitely not happy with how her life has changed, what she carries with her and what her needs are. There are already hints in this film of what is quite standard for a female vampire horror film - lesbian elements. But female vampires also stretch back into literary history, where they got space earlier than in film.

The Australian horror film Red Christmas doesn't have a downright great or clever script, but that doesn't matter all that much. This is a film that is pretty fine to watch without suffering any harm or feeling like this must have fallen out of a dumpster somewhere. A watchable horror film that doesn't bring much to the table, but it also certainly won't bore you. Dee Wallace is great.

Although it may not seem like it, Subconscious Cruelty is trying to say something, and it has a certain telling value. It's not simply a matter of godless spewing of obscenities and disgusting things. There's something layered on top of itself here that manages to affect you, and at the same time it penetrates into your dark depths. We’ve never had a perverted idea? We’ve never wanted something that others would find strange? Karim Hussain reveals this darkness in his own way.

The French horror film The Darkest wants to appear like it has an intimate environment and simplicity. It builds atmosphere in a way that sort of offers itself, but at the same time should be functional. I can't help it though, watching this film simply didn't do anything for me. There are no moments here that are really worthwhile. It's sort of a concoction of the known and the seen. The short runtime definitely helps.

The American film Kill Game wanted to take inspiration from slashers, but it also wanted to deliver an intelligent script. It definitely failed at both. The slasher aspect is definitely there, but the intelligent script is left somewhere in the middle. It's a bit of a shame, but if you didn't have high expectations, you might be satisfied with this spectacle, if only because of the way the filmmakers try to tangle the whole thing even more at the end.

The British film House of Long Shadows is a great homage to old Hammer films, but also to horror comedies. The film doesn't take itself seriously, which is evident from the fact that the actors overact a bit and the camera focuses on their faces and expressions. This simply par of them, this is what made them famous, as well as their voices, at least in the case of Lee and Price. Yes, this group of gentlemen is simply great, even when they are older.

The British attempt at horror called The Unfolding truly remains primarily an attempt at horror, because it is impossible to take a film like this too seriously. It's a dull spectacle, in which you won't find anything that would really get you out of your chair. It follows the beaten path, which is very beaten indeed. The filmmakers don't want to single themselves out, and they don't want something different. They simply want to make a film and they don't care that it's going to be dismal.

The American film Caesar and Otto's Summer Camp Massacre was made quickly by the filmmakers without them putting much effort into it. There’s no effort in the story, in the deaths, in the performances, and certainly not in the humor, which is truly dismal. There's simply nothing worthwhile here.

The Spanish horror film Night of the Seagulls is part of a series that in and of itself is very good. This fourth film is also very good. The Templars on horseback are simply frightening, as if they cannot be stopped, as if death were inevitable. Add to that the contrast with beautiful women, and of course the pretty nice special effects.
