Dařbuján a Pandrhola (1959)

Englisch This is a classic Czech fairy tale in the sense that it is shown every Christmas, and yet it is not a classic fairy tale at all. It's more of a village comedy with a strong moral lesson and a story about how a person tries to overcome death. However, the film is made in such a way that there's no pathos in it, and I don't mind the morality at all in fact.

Lotrando und die schöne Zubejda (1996)

Englisch If you happen to find yourself humming the songs from this fairy tale in your head during the year, it probably means it's gotten deep under your skin. I don't mind at all how beautifully naive it is and I enjoy how beautiful it is, as well as the great humor and great ideas that know how to caress the soul.

Der Salzprinz (1982)

Englisch I have to admit that I missed out on watching this fairy tale for a very long time and even now, when I finally saw it, it didn't grow on me. I think it's because the Jan Werich version is so close to me and is more humorous, and that I've gotten so used to it that I didn't like this almost depressing version as much. With that said, this film has something going for it and the fairy tale is different.

Godless (2017) (Serie)

Englisch Westerns are still alive, which the Godless series lets us know beautifully. Even today, it is possible to tell good and strong stories in this genre, which are also very gritty in places and pull no punches. The film is also very well cast and each actor does a great job, and the great production design perfectly evokes the Wild West era.

The Covenant (2017)

Englisch While the title certainly doesn't tell the entire story, The Covenant is actually an ordinary exorcism horror film where the word horror may be a bit of an exaggeration. In its concept of exorcism, it's really too ordinary, playing it safe with the fact that it's not visually interesting and everything plays out according as expected, and this is also true for the finale, which tries to be somewhat mysterious.

Trapped - Gefangen in Island (2016) (Serie)

Englisch On the one hand, I liked the way it was conceived - slow, kind of calm to a certain extent, but about the same as an avalanche slowly rolling out of the mud. In the end, it manages to grind, mainly because there are scenes that are definitely not pretty to watch. But the plot failed to excite me and I just kind of watched it without any real interest.

FlashForward (2009) (Serie)

Englisch This series definitely had potential, but it failed to turn it into that imaginary gold with the one season it was eventually given. Even in the first season, the plot starts to get a bit too overbearing and it wants to be too mysterious, and at times it's almost reminiscent of the mysterious game from Lost, which is honestly a bit tiresome.

Blood Beach - Horror am Strand (1980)

Englisch The horror film Blood Beach unfortunately didn't turn out to be one of those hidden gems that one likes to discover. This is just a B-movie that doesn't have a good focus and is so ordinary that there's nothing in it to draw you in, except perhaps the main idea that appears in the title of the film. After a few dozen minutes you will probably realize that the film is boring you with its almost TV-like concept.

American Assassin (2017)

Englisch I have to say that I quite liked this film and I enjoyed it. It's quite fast-paced, and it's also very gritty, perhaps unexpectedly so. The torture was indeed very unpleasant and uncomfortable to watch, which is just as well. Films shouldn't be afraid of grittiness if it's an important part of them.

Prevenge (2016)

Englisch Prevenge is a good film. It's a very gritty film. You tend to know pretty clearly where it's going, but you're still not sure how it's going to end. It’s pretty evident that the film is British, and that is definitely a good thing. It's as if underneath it all there is a dry humor that jumps out at you in the form of the individual deaths. There’s also a very interesting visual aspect that can surprise us with masks in the final part.
