Panic Room (2002)

Englisch Panic Room falls a little short against the rest of Mr. David Fincher's oeuvre. However, it’s still a gripping story with excellent cinematography, precise direction, well-developed characters, and an outstanding Jodie Foster who really acts like her life depended on it. As a genre flick, this is one of the better, if not the best, but as far as David Fincher is concerned, slightly above average. (Though he makes up for it with The Curious Case of Benjamin Button).

Ring (2002)

Englisch A thoroughly thought out "investigative" thriller. "Day after day" the tension builds and the atmosphere thickens nicely. Naomi Watts almost matches her performance from Mulholland Drive here, but only almost.)

Superman Returns (2006)

Englisch Bryan Singer, like Christopher Nolan, has done honorably at breathing new life into his comic book hero, but his Superman Returns is a long way from Nolan's Batman Begins or The Dark Knight. It's hard to say whether it's the fault of the director (which I doubt) or the studio that despite such an ungodly fat budget, the result is basically a slightly above average flick. I wasn't disappointed, but my expectations were not exceeded (as they were with the Batman films). Still, I remain optimistic and look forward to The Man of Steel. Something tells me that this time Singer will step it up and film it to perfection, we'll see. For "Superman’s return" it's rather an incomplete 4 stars.

Der Mann, der niemals lebte (2008)

Englisch An absolutely exceptionally crafted and thoughtful spy thriller starring the excellent DiCaprio. Even at seventy-one, Ridley Scott proves he is a "Directing Master" capable of doing a brilliant job with virtually anything. The story is based on suspense, but whenever some action enters the mix it is definitely worth it.

Charlie und die Schokoladenfabrik (2005)

Englisch A breathtaking visual experience. The atmosphere of the entire film is pleasantly "sweet" and the moral messages are not surprisingly intrusive; on the contrary, they need not be restricted to the kids. :) For Burton, for Depp, for Elfman, for the feast for the eyes, and for some really hilarious jokes, 5 stars.

Mulholland Drive - Straße der Finsternis (2001)

Englisch A chilling drama that kept me up at night and forced me to think. I really gave the film my utmost attention, and I was desperate not to miss the slightest detail that might then cost me a shred of explanation. Up to about the 110th minute, everything is understandable, but what takes place in the final scenes is something unbelievable, completely incomprehensible to me (though I felt at times that there were some clues to an explanation, ultimately I was "disappointed" in this respect) and fascinating. For another half hour after the closing credits, I remained sitting on the couch, staring dully at the DVD menu screen. For a moment I considered playing it again. :) Bottom line – David Lynch is the man, so very much the man, the direction is absolutely amazing, as is the music, sound, cinematography, and actors. A totally unique and almost "otherworldly" cinematic experience.

Franklyn (2008)

Englisch Undercooked. Slightly better visuals and more "narrative" would have given Franklyn the juice it needed. But on the other hand, this is a low-budget directorial debut, so "technically" I guess it really couldn't have been better.

The Gift - Die dunkle Gabe (2000)

Englisch After the third screening, I'm adding a star for the really excellent atmosphere, the music that suits the story to a tee, the really beautiful locations where Raimi has placed the tale of murder, and the beautiful fortune teller played by Cate Blanchett. I think that in the field of "mystery thrillers" The Gift is one of the most successful films ever.

Ananas Express (2008)

Englisch A fun, action-packed, lighthearted, never boring "green" comedy. Seth Rogen and James Franco excel as the stoner duo, their dialogue about something will entertain even the "non-green" community. The extended car scene with the two Koreans conversing, with one of them pretending not to speak English, is one of the best the film has to offer. A bit of a weak 4 stars, but the broken glass scene is unforgettable. :)

Der Exorzist (1973)

Englisch Quite undeniably one of the greatest, if not the greatest classic in its genre. Elaborate characterizations, inventive direction, a smooth plot + incredible atmosphere in the first half hour of the film. I thank Mr. Friedkin for this masterpiece that has never been surpassed (let Exorcist: The Beginning, Exorcist II: The Heretic, and similar crap be proof of that).
