Juanmi Gutiérrez formerly worked as an announcer on San Sebastian’s Herri Irratia radio and as a producer for HABE, where he was responsible for educational audiovisuals serving to teach adults the Basque language. His filmography as a director, encompassing more than 35 films, opened with El paño negro (1971) and includes titles such as Tabula rasa (Blank Slate, 2004), Bozes lexanas (2005), Isiltasun kalea / Calle Silencio (2006), Motema na ngai (2008), Zuzendu mesedez! / ¡Enfoquen por favor! (2009), La plaza de la música (2010), and Mur-mur (2012), all screened at the San Sebastian Festival. Paseko Txoriak (Birds of Passage) is Juanmi’s last documentary work.
