Robert Rossen started his career writing socially conscious films noirs that provided implicit left-wing commentary on the anti-communist investigations taking place in Hollywood. He moved into directing in the late 1940s – his third film, All the King’s Men (1949), won the Academy Award for Best Picture – before being blacklisted for his association with the Communist Party.
