I once thought collaboration with Tim Burton was what gave Danny Elfman his wings. Now I know that it was the shackles that dragged this demon into our gloomy reality from the unruly, nonsensical sixth dimension where he had previously worked with his brother. Forbidden Zone is a geyser of pure creativity unfettered by logic, rationality or taste. Everything here is subordinated to absurdity, caricature, decadence and free association. Psychedelia does not need colours; just more than a small amount of imagination and freedom is enough.

Es wäre mir nicht in den Sinn gekommen, dass ich relativ kurz nach dem Anschauen von The Sinful Dwarf auf einen anderen Film stoße, in dem ein perverser Zwerg sexuelle Sklavinnen hält, auch wenn es dieses Mal eher im Stil von „Alice im Wunderland“ ist. Die Elfman-Brüder mussten beim Drehen auf irgendetwas Großartiges setzen, sonst weiß ich nicht, wie dieser surrealistische Mix aus filmischem Geschmacklosigkeit entstanden sein könnte. Eine objektive Bewertung dieses obskuren Musicals ist schlichtweg unmöglich.

It's definitely not a film for everyone and while watching it I wondered if I'd seen anything weirder. To be honest, I'm not sure if I have. You can be sure that this is an unusual experience, but one that will captivate you with its bizarre imaginativeness. In this respect, it simply works and deserves at least a slightly above average rating.
