Poor, beautiful Maria Hernandez scavenges to support herself and her elderly godmother. When her godmother dies, she is taken in by the wealthy Don Fernando de la Vega, even though she is resented by his wife, Victoria, and her niece, Soraya. Maria falls in love with Don Fernando's irresponsible son, Luis Fernando, arousing the jealousy of Soraya. He and Maria soon marry, but a misunderstanding tears the couple apart, and the grieving Maria gives up their child for adoption.
