Der junge Gelegenheitsarbeiter Gino kehrt in einer abgelegenen Trattoria in der Po-Ebene ein. Sie wird von dem grobschlächtigen Bragana und seiner jungen Frau Giovanna bewirtschaftet. Schon bei ihrer ersten Begegnung ist ein erotisches Knistern zwischen Giovanna und Gino zu spüren. Giovanna überredet ihren Mann, Gino als Mechaniker einzustellen. An excellent example of capturing the realism of Italy during the Second World War. At times, one wonders how this could have been filmed in fascist Italy at all, because it does not paint a pretty picture of a strong country. On the contrary, it portrays the country as weak, and the characters that appear are equally weak. This leads to them becoming victims of their own weakness.
