El Espectador, the first and one of the biggest newspapers of Colombia, is still appearing daily. This could be called a down-right miracle, since the newspaper does not conceal its anti-drugs policy and has openly joined battle with the narcotics mafia. A high price had to be paid for this standpoint: blackmail, the murdering of a number of journalists working for the paper, and a devastating bomb attack on the main office in Bogotá. Since 1989, the re-built office is put under permanent police protection, but that has not taken away the journalists' mortal fear of the powerful Colombian underworld. One journalist of El Espectador tells about her life since the war with the drugs mafia broke out. She constantly uses pseudonyms, is always on the move to different places to live, is never on time for a date for fear of an attack, and always rejects possible lovers. The fact that she barely escaped a number of attempts on her life proves that her precautions are not exaggerated. El espectador is an incredible report of a group of journalists fighting against professional drug trafficking. (International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam)
