Auf waghalsigen Einsätzen zur Brandbekämpfung aus der Luft riskiert Pete Sandich (Richard Dreyfuss) jeden Tag Kopf und Kragen. Seiner Freundin Dorinda (Holly Hunter) zuliebe will er den mörderischen Job aufgeben. Auf seinem letzten Einsatz passiert es: seine Maschine explodiert. Er landet allerdings nicht im Jenseits, sondern irgendwo zwischen Leben und Tod. Er bekommt von einem geheimnisvollen Wesen noch einen Auftrag: Er soll seinen Mut und sein Können an einen jungen Piloten weitergeben.
