There are strange people living in the Russian countryside. One example no doubt is the main character in The Man Who Harnassed Idea. This farmer lives on an old farm with his elder sister, two horses, cats and dogs in a hamlet, close to the city of Perm. He loaths working, he prefers contemplation. He does not care about conveniences. Even a stove he can do without, despite the fact that temperatures can get as low as minus 30 degrees Celsius in this part of the Urals. According to the farmer, who the filmmaker compares to the Greek thinker Diogenes, the animals provide sufficient warmth. He has named one of his horses 'Idea', a literal illustration of his belief that his ideas can take him anywhere. Filmmaker Pavel Pechonkin felt attracted to the farmer, because his way of life fosters reflection on the relationship between human civilisation and nature.
