The Prom

I expected something bolder from Ryan Murphy, but otherwise this is a pretty good film. I don't really follow musicals, but the casting caught my attention. Nicole Kidman is still unbelievably sexy, and unfortunately, Keegan-Michael Key doesn’t play his typical funny role, which disappointed me a bit. The LGBT storyline may deter many, but those who can get past it will enjoy this colorful, entertaining, and beautiful high school musical. The prom party was decent, and I especially enjoyed the dance numbers. The main song was also good, but it's a shame about the running time and that there were very few funny moments. Overall, it's a bearable three stars, and musical fans might be satisfied with it a little more. Lemonade made from the sweetest ingredients. However, it's precisely those values that I so gladly uphold, so the smile didn't disappear from my face even in those excessively optimistic moments. Considering the topic, the distributor, and the director, it's of course possible that local viewers might go crazy, but it's nothing more than an over two-hour-long episode of Glee. With perfect choreography, an incredible Broadway guest cast, and genre-appropriate plot twists. Sing along or let it be. (28.12.2020)

The Prom ist kitschig, multikulti, ultratolerant, bunt, regenbogenfarben - kurzum, typisch Ryan Murphy. Man könnte sagen, dass es sich um eine Filmversion von Glee handelt, mit besseren Schauspielern und zurückhaltenderen Tänzern und Sängern (obwohl es am Ende zugegebenermaßen ein wenig wild wurde). Meryl Streep war wie immer perfekt, Nicole Kidman sollte mit ihren Plastiken aufhören, und James Corden gab eine überraschend glaubwürdige Vorstellung. Jo Ellen Pellman als Emma erinnerte mich ungemein an eine jüngere Version von Drew Barrymore (siehe Ungeküsst). Der Film enthält zwar eine Reihe krass pädagogischer oder "leicht" unrealistischer Szenen (wir singen in einem Einkaufszentrum und sind nach drei Tönen und zwei Umdrehungen sofort toleranter) - womit Glee völlig überfrachtet war -, andererseits behandelt er aber auch ernste und immer noch aktuelle Themen, sei es die Toleranz gegenüber sexuellen Minderheiten, Familien- und Partnerbeziehungen oder existenzielle Fragen. A musical in which a lot happens, but nothing really. The story doesn't have any fixed line and keeps going from one theme to another... Unfunny, confusing. It's good that the creators worked with LGBT themes, but using the word "lesbian" in every tenth line is too much. I think that although the film tried to be nice, it didn't work very well and the whole thing actually felt like one big satire. On the other hand, great cast and perfect visuals are something you can't take your eyes off. I wouldn't watch it again, but once to unwind... why not. (14.12.2020)
