Danny McBride (Vice Principals) returns to HBO with the comedy series that tells the story of a world-famous televangelist family with a long tradition of deviance, greed and charitable work – all in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. McBride will star as main character Jesse Gemstone, who sees himself as a maverick in the ministry game, taking what his father, Eli Gemstone (John Goodman), has built and expanded it for a more modern audience. The cast also includes Edi Patterson as Jesse's sister Judy; Cassidy Freeman as Jesse's wife Amber; Tony Cavalero as ex-Satanist Keefe Chambers, saved by Jesse's younger brother Kelvin (Adam Devine); Tim Baltz as Judy's fiance, BJ; and Greg Alan Williams as Martin Imari, a conservative Kenyan, and Eli's right-hand man. Season 1 (2019) (S01)
The first season surprised me. In a good way. The humor was by no means cheap, I don’t even consider it to be purely a comedy. An element of drama was added which wasn't ostentatious, nevertheless present in the story. The Gemstone family itself was great, as if they had emerged from some atheist’s wet dream, which is another reason why I could not be dissatisfied. I didn't exactly roar with laughter, but I had a good time. My favorite character was definitely Amber, I just have a thing for women with a killer instinct.
