Mit viel Schwung erzählt der japanische Regisseur Nagahisa Makoto vom Leben wie von einem Regenbogen-Videospiel. Hinter der überschwänglichen Flut von Ideen thematisiert We Are Little Zombies aber die Unsicherheiten einer Jugend, die an nichts mehr glaubt, und für die nichts jemals ernst ist – nicht einmal der Tod. It's hard to say who this film is for. It’s too childish for adults and too depressing for kids. The attempt to help children cope with the loss of their parents gets lost in a chaotic mix of bizarre elements. Maybe there was no deeper intention, and it’s just a random collection of the director's thoughts with no clear vision or message. In the end, it falls into that category of quirky Japanese films that I just don't get. My hit-or-miss relationship with Japanese cinema continues.
