With 37 million inhabitants Tokyo is one of the world’s most populated cities. Its high population density has forced urban planners to develop the city to a height and to optimise existing space. The documentary directed by Damien Faure gives us a surprising look at city life. It does not focus on modern high-rise buildings, colourful supermarkets – often considered a symbol of the city – but it makes us feel like the house is deformed by the urban development. The film also mentions architects who are confronted with this architecture. It’s also a lesson about Japanese space, starting with tatami, the use of space between the house and the street, and adaptation to the lack of space in overcrowded Tokyo.
