Der Student Jeffrey Beaumont kehrt in das amerikanische Provinznest seiner Heimat zurück. Nach dem Schlaganfall seines Vaters soll er in dessen Laden aushelfen. Doch die scheinbar unberührte Idylle voll roter Rosen, weißer Gartenzäune und azurblauem Himmel verblasst jäh. Denn Jeffrey findet am Weg ein abgeschnittenes Ohr.
