Derry Girls (2018)

Englisch The quality of Derry Girls had an increasing tendency unlike many other shows. While Season 1 still had its awkward moments, Season 2 was already on track, and Season 3 didn’t spoil my good impression in any way. What I find strange is that all three of my favorite characters were actually supporting roles, and I liked them from the opening episodes to the very end. The central five were a good combination of characters, but they just couldn't compare to Sister Michael, Garry, and Joe. Those three set the bar high and never once lowered it. The show perfectly blends humor with some pretty serious matters, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. / Lesson learned: Politics, religion, war. Can they be used to make an equation? ()

Season 1 (2018) (S01)

Englisch After the first season of a series about the life of Catholics in Northern Ireland, I was quite happy with the show, but I still can't shake the feeling that the creators could have done better. Half of the season lacked edge. It's a shame, because the other three episodes were really enjoyable. The lead characters are Catholic school girls (and James), but all three of my favorite characters were adult roles. Besides Sister Michael, it was Grandpa Joe and Da Gerry. I really enjoyed their scenes together. ()

Episode 1 (2018) (S01E01)

Englisch The opening episode pleasantly surprised me with its delightful 90s retro vibe. Though I suspect folks from Northern Ireland might view it through a different lens. I found myself smiling consistently, hovering around a three-star rating, but by the end, I was laughing out loud, so I had to bump it up to four. ()

Episode 2 (2018) (S01E02)

Englisch The second episode with its fast-food-like pace and Sister Michael's speech had me laughing from start to finish. Plus, it offered some insight into the hierarchical division within Erin's family. With three favorite characters in tow, I'm definitely feeling satisfied after this one. ()

Episode 3 (2018) (S01E03)

Englisch Seems like I may have overhyped things in my previous review, as the third episode promptly brought me back down to earth. Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy it, but the laughs were fewer and farther between this time around. It just didn't quite live up to the same level of fun as before. ()

Episode 4 (2018) (S01E04)

Englisch Children from Chernobyl and another fantastic opening speech by Sister Michael set the stage for a promising ride. And boy, did it deliver. The creators skillfully weaved together both storylines – the party and the family dynamics – and injected just the right amount of humor into each. It was a winning formula that left me thoroughly entertained. ()

Episode 5 (2018) (S01E05)

Englisch The subplot involving the IRA supporter didn't quite resonate with me, and while the interactions between Grandpa Joe and Gerry provided some highlights, they weren't enough to carry the episode on their own. ()

Episode 6 (2018) (S01E06)

Englisch Well, I hate to say it, but this was a letdown. Ever since the finale of the first season, I've been eagerly anticipating something more, but unfortunately, this episode fell short. While there were moments of humor, they were few and far between. It feels like the creators really dropped the ball on this one – based on the satisfaction curve thus far, I should have been in for an excellent episode... ()

Season 2 (2019) (S02)

Englisch I’ve recently seen an interview with an actress about a show she was in that was getting a lot of crap. She said that everything does unless it’s a Netflix or HBO series. And I wonder if it might not also have something to do with quality and content. I personally couldn’t care less who is behind which series. The only important factor for me is whether I’m having fun or not. And I usually have a great time watching Derry Girls. The quality has gone up compared to the first season, so I expect to be entertained by Season 3 as well. ()

Across the Barricade (2019) (S02E01)

Englisch The episode left me with mixed feelings. While I did have a decent time overall, there were definitely some weaker/cringy moments. It ended up being an average episode, but Sister Michael's presence managed to lift it up ever so slightly. ()

Ms De Brún and the Child of Prague (2019) (S02E02)

Englisch Once again, Sister Michael delivered a stellar speech at the start of the episode, setting the stage for what was to come. And let me tell you, I wasn't disappointed – there were no unpleasant surprises in sight. At times, it even reminded me of the movie Bad Teacher. The movie theatre and trying to figure out who Keyser Söze was had me cracking up. ()

The Concert (2019) (S02E03)

Englisch This episode had a clear theme: a trip to the Take That concert in Belfast. But boy, did the creators throw us a curveball by turning it into a full-blown road movie with obstacle after obstacle. Let me tell you, I highly doubt I'd be able to enjoy a concert by my favorite band if I had to worry about a polar bear breathing down my neck. ()

The Curse (2019) (S02E04)

Englisch The fourth episode was fantastic from start to finish. The creators really nailed it, catering to all viewers – those who aren't fans of weddings got to experience some somber gatherings, while I, being the democratic viewer that I am, thoroughly enjoyed both. It was great to see Gerry given more room to express himself, and overall, I had a blast. ()

The Prom (2019) (S02E05)

Englisch It's funny how things turn out – I found myself enjoying Aunt Birdie's memorial gathering more than the graduation party, despite the latter ending just as you'd expect a graduation party to. I wasn't expecting to have such a blast with girls picking out their dresses. And the TV... ()

The President (2019) (S02E06)

Englisch Whenever the creators shine the spotlight on the Joe/Gerry duo, I know I'm in for a good time. The episode about welcoming the president revealed that Bill is definitely not your average Bill, that Chelsea likely isn't a fan of chlorine in her eyes, and that saving a seat for your friends leaves no room for figuring out who's who. ()

Season 3 (2022) (S03)

Englisch The third season of Derry Girls had me hooked – didn't even realize how much I missed them. The individual episodes had me cracking up big time, and I love a good laugh, so the final grade was a no-brainer. But here's the bummer – finding out I won't be heading back to Derry anymore left me a bit disappointed. / Lesson learned: Nothing lasts forever. ()

The Night Before (2022) (S03E01)

Englisch I had to give this episode five stars because I'd missed the girls like crazy. The plot was hilarious. After the hiatus, it hit me again that humor isn't just about the main crew; the supporting characters, like Sister Michael, Gerry, and Joe, bring the laughs, too. It's awesome having them all back. / Lesson learned: Work might better you, but it can also drag you into some sticky situations. ()

The Affair (2022) (S03E02)

Englisch The second episode was even better than the first one. All the characters owned the screen space, and I swear, and gave me many a chuckle. Even the supporting characters did an excellent job of keeping me entertained. / Lesson learned: Don't give in to temptation. At least not too often. ()

Stranger on a Train (2022) (S03E03)

Englisch Okay, it's crystal clear now – Season 3's got some serious potential. Every episode's been a hit so far. The third episode, with its rail trip, had a pretty crazy plot. The main five characters stole the spotlight, overshadowing the other family members, even Sister Michael and that's saying something. / Lesson learned: Don't steal food form other people's luggage. ()

The Haunting (2022) (S03E04)

Englisch This episode left me a tad disappointed. I was expecting an epic experience with such a promising title, but it didn't quite hit the mark. Don't get me wrong, the fourth episode had its funny moments, but compared to what Season 3's been serving up, it brought the least laughs. Still, some moments were priceless. / Lesson learned: Double-check the address. ()
