Las sufragistas

In 2008, Eufrosina Cruz Mendoza, from the town of Santa María Quiegolani, Oaxaca, demanded her right to vote and to become a candidate for mayor, which was denied. Eufrosina’s battle revives the history of Mexican women’s century-long struggle for the right to vote. Fifty years after winning the vote, contemporary suffragists continue to defend women’s rights, since there still exists deep resistance to the equal participation of women in politics in our society and in political parties.
