Kharkiv, the 1930s. The heyday of Ukrainian art. In a new luxury "Slovo" House built specifically for artists, there happily settles an ambitious young poet, Vladimir Akimov. He, a guy from the provinces, who works as a proof-reader in a printing house, has never even dreamed of living under one roof with prominent Ukrainian writers and artists. Meanwhile, as a result of forced collectivization of agriculture, Ukraine is suffering a famine – Holodomor. Peasants die by the thousands while the well-fed residents of the "Slovo" House have no clue what is going on. The propaganda speaks of a great harvest. But disturbing rumours start reaching the artists in the end. Also, the NKVD comes at night and successive artists disappear. The story of the "Executed Renaissance", the generation of Ukrainian artists persecuted by the totalitarian regime, against the background of one of the greatest genocides of the 20th century, Holodomor, which killed almost 7 million people.
