Der arbeitslose Samurai Sanjuro kommt auf der Wanderschaft durch das Japan des vorigen Jahrhunderts in ein abgelegenes Bergdorf, wo zwei verfeindete Familienclans mit allen Mitteln um die Vorherrschaft kämpfen.
