Die junge, ungestüme Joey hat bei ihrer Stippvisite im heimatlichen San Francisco für ihre Eltern, Christina und Matt Drayton, eine Menge Überraschungen parat. Voller Stolz und Überschwang stellt sie ihnen ihren Freund Dr. John Prentice vor. Zwar hat sie den verwitweten Afroamerikaner erst vor kurzem kennengelernt, geheiratet soll dennoch so rasch als möglich werden.
