A happily married couple has everything...except a baby. Isolde (Doris Day) is determined to get one any way possible, so she's registered herself and her husband, Augie (Richard Widmark), with the most reputable adoption agency in town, Rock-a-Bye. They seem the perfect candidates--a happy, secure couple. But that's before their neighbor, Dick (Gig Young), plants a seed in Augie's head about Dick's own philandering ways, and Augie finds himself tempted to stray from his normal faithfulness. When Rock-a-Bye sends a social worker out to investigate the couple and their neighbors--who are Augie and Isolde's references--the mixed signals, misunderstandings, and farcical situations turn a near-tragedy into a madcap comedy. Day, Widmark (in a rare comic performance), and Young are eminently likable in this Gene Kelly-directed romp. (Verleiher-Text)
