Astronomers from my Neighbourhood is Patricio Guzmán´s short documentary film borne during the making of Nostalgia for the Light. It portrays two enthusiastic members of the collective Telescoperos, who share Guzmán´s love for astronomy. Because of its short duration the movie is informative and interesting without branching out too much. Carlos Contreras informs the viewer that the mirror is the most important part of a telescope. It enables enlarging the light of stars. The viewer gets a glimpse of the amateur´s enthusiasm of astronomy when the other main character, Guillermo Fernández states that the most important events of his life have been his wedding day and the day he finished his first self-made telescopic mirror. He spent several years building his own observatory from scrap and this testament of his inventiveness is equipped with all one needs, including a urinal. One can read between the lines that the documentary is not just a portrait of monomaniacs. Building one´s own telescope has been the gate to freedom during Pinochet´s restricting regime because it enables observing an unlimited universe. This magnificent portrait places Chileans under the microscope. For them astronomy is freedom. (OK) (Midnight Sun Film Festival)
