Pilots of the RAF ran huge risks in daring missions over Nazi Europe. The threat of dogfights, flak from anti-air cannons and even simple mechanical failure made every flight a peril for even the most experienced of pilots. Many of those who crashed were sent to prisoner of war camps but some airmen managed to elude the Nazis. With the aid of local people and resistance fighters, these "RAF evaders" managed to avoid German patrols and attempt to make their way back home to the white cliffs of Dover. Others relied on members of secret escape lines such as the Comet Line who smuggled Allied pilots out of Nazi occupied territories. Those who found themselves behind enemy lines owed their lives to these brave souls and they never forgot the sacrifices made by the people who risked everything to help them. (Viasat)
