Ruby (Keenan Kampa) ist eine klassische Balletttänzerin, die an der renommiertesten Musikschule New Yorks studiert. Tanzen ist ihre große Leidenschaft. Sie ist talentiert und voller Hingabe, lediglich der moderne Tanz liegt ihr nicht sehr. Als sie den britischen Violinisten Johnnie (Nicholas Galitzine) zufällig kennenlernt, ahnt sie noch nicht, wie er ihr Leben verändern wird. Johnnie, der mit seinen StreetDancer-Freunden zusammenwohnt und mit improvisierten Konzerten seinen Lebensunterhalt verdient, eröffnet Ruby eine völlig neue, faszinierende und spannende Seite der Musik. Doch als Johnnie eines Tages von den New Yorker Behörden aufgegriffen wird und keine Green Card vorweisen kann, droht sein Traum von einem Leben im angesagten Manhattan zu zerplatzen. Es gibt nur einen Ausweg: Der Gewinner eines Tanzwettbewerbes an Rubys Schule erhält ein Studentenvisum für die USA sowie ein Stipendium. Gemeinsam erarbeiten Ruby, Johnnie und seine StreetDancer-Freunde eine Choreografie für den Wettbewerb, in der die Coolness des StreetDance mit der Anmut des Balletts und der klassischen Musik auf der Bühne verschmelzen. I got to this film completely by accident and I have to say that I didn't have such a sweaty ass after the end of a movie, even after Evil Dead, and a t-shirt wet from tears! The film is incredibly vivid, motivating, inspiring, moving, modern, romantic and in one big word breathtaking. There are no well known actors, the entire film is made up of people who are extremely talented in both dance and music and all the numbers put all the dance films of the last 40 years to shame. The finale features a triple combo of ballet, violin and hip-hop, definitely one of the best I've seen in a long time. Also worth mentioning is the battle on the Metro or with the waiters at the celebration. A great show for young people. Too bad the film doesn't have an extra hour. I enjoyed it immensely. 85%.

It's a somewhat romantic - fortunately not overly romantic - dance classic, but because SHE is a dancer and HE is a violinist, it gains a bit of a fresh perspective. The connection between the violin and dance is captured quite well here; it's modern, lively, and interesting even for those who aren't typically fans of the violin.
