London 1940. Catrin Cole (Gemma Arterton) braucht einen Job, um sich und ihren Freund, den Künstler Ellis Cole, über Wasser zu halten. Sie heuert beim „Ministerium für Information" an. Dessen Filme sollen der Nation in Kriegszeiten wieder Mut und Hoffnung geben. Catrins Aufgabe als Drehbuchautorin ist es, einem der Skripte eine ‚weiblichere Note' zu verleihen. Dabei trifft sie auf den ebenso brillanten wie zynischen Drehbuchautor Tom Buckley (Sam Claflin). Und während in London die Bomben fallen, machen sich Catrin und ihr wild zusammengewürfeltes Team rund um die inzwischen ein wenig in die Jahre gekommene Schauspielerlegende Ambrose Hilliard (Bill Nighy) daran, einen herzerwärmenden und zugleich ermutigenden Film zu drehen. The “tear-jerker” category demonstrates its animacy beyond the surviving gender formulas. Their Finest brings to the classic love triangle a motif of emancipation, which conditions the reversal of clichés and roles that are ascribed to characters on the basis of gender. The plotline about the promotion of women in positions and in sectors previously awarded to men corresponds to this. Through well-developed male characters, the film also offers identification models for the male part of the audience, the result of which is a spectacle in which everyone can weep in an emancipated way.

I like how romance is just a peripheral part of this story. It's much more about the main heroine, about history, and simply about the story being told here. Which is a good combination, because a protruding romantic plane wouldn't have worked so well here. Moreover, the casting deserves appreciation; it's fantastic.
