Die schüchterne Friseuse Béatrice reist mit ihrer Kollegin Marylène ans Meer. Während ihre lebenslustige Freundin sich mit einem neuen Liebhaber aus dem Staub macht, trifft die zurückgelassene Béatrice in einem Café auf den Studenten François. Eine zaghafte Liebe beginnt und zurück in Paris zieht Béatrice bei François ein. Während sie sich der jungen Liebe hingibt, drängt er sie dazu, sich beruflich und gesellschaftlich weiterzuentwickeln. Doch Béatrice bleibt ihrer sprachlosen Passivität treu und selbst als sich François schließlich von ihr trennt, scheint sie ihr Schicksal stillschweigend und ohne jeglichen Widerstand zu akzeptieren. A strange drama that takes it upon itself to tell an awfully human story. It reeks of French poeticism which I personally like much more when it’s got legendary French noir actors instead of two chicks that don’t know what to do with their lives and so they fall in love with just about everybody and in the end, everybody loses.

I confess that it was the film Elle that showed me how interesting of an actress Isabelle Huppert is. The Lacemaker showed me again how great she was back when she was around twenty-four years old. Confident, though seemingly unremarkable, the performance is mature and clearly stands out above her fellow acting colleagues.
