In 1986, an alienated 16 year-old, Lara Hill (Eleanor Tomlinson), accompanies her art historian father (Stephen Rea) to an abandoned castle across the Iron Curtain. From a car crash outside of the castle, emerges the beautiful and enigmatic Carmilla (Julia Pietrucha). Lara secrets her away and the two are drawn into an intoxicating relationship. This isn't a great horror, but it's a film that can still make an impact with its atmosphere. It's not overly explicit, and there aren't any great or memorable scenes, but overall, the way the film affects you is something that can captivate you. It's dark, it's somewhat hopeless, and that's something that horror can evoke as well, and in this case, it's quite well done. Definitely an average film.
