Hackeři (E14)

Hacking is an extreme form of DIY, says one of the hackers in this episode of Tribes, a documentary series about various city subcultures. This controversial and complex hobby is linked to an eccentric lifestyle which leaves hackers outside of normal society and impacts their personal and working lives in unusual ways. For one female hacker it means relaxing between flagpoles instead of trees in a forest, while for another protagonist of the film it brings insomnia and an unwillingness to conform to school authority. The producers depict hackers' individual and shared activities with short shots of one of many devices made by hackers – for instance a lightning transformer that can also produce sounds and organise them into faithful imitations of classical compositions. Such transformations of everyday objects are a typical product of the hacker philosophy of life – the challenge to identify the hidden mechanisms of various phenomena and their subsequent deconstruction and reconstruction into new forms.
