Hollywood, 1958. Marla Mabrey (Collins), eine Schönheitskönigin aus der Provinz und fromme Baptistin, kommt nach Los Angeles, da der berüchtigte Howard Hughes (Beatty) sie unter Vertrag genommen hat. Am Flughafen wird sie von Chauffeur Frank Forbes (Alden Ehrenreich) abgeholt, einem tief religiösen Methodisten, der kurz davor steht, seine Liebste zu heiraten, die er schon seit der 7. Klasse kennt. Doch Marla und Frank fühlen sich sofort zueinander hingezogen, was nicht nur ihre religiösen Überzeugungen auf eine harte Probe stellt, sondern auch Hughes Regel Nr. 1 verletzt: Angestellten ist es verboten, mit Vertragsschauspierlinnen jegliche Art von Beziehung einzugehen. Schon bald stehen Marla und Frank zunehmend unter den Einfluss des Milliardärs, jeder von beiden auf sehr unterschiedliche und unvorhersehbare Weise. Je tiefer Hughes sie in seine bizarre Welt zieht, desto mehr geraten die Wertvorstellungen der jungen Leute ins Wanken und stellt ihr Leben grundlegend auf den Kopf. (Fox Deutschland)

Warren Beatty returned to the acting elite and enlisted not only his wife Annette Bening but also other acting stars, starlets, and legends. Unfortunately, even with such elite talent and a character like Howard Hughes, a film can turn out to be dull and predictable, likely not entertaining you for most of its duration. I didn't enjoy it.

Warren Beatty has reportedly been flirting with the idea of making a film about Howard Hughes for decades. The problem is that it is not very noticeable in the result. His film Rules Don't Apply doesn't reveal much about the eccentric billionaire. So there's nothing left but to focus on the romantic storyline in the form of the budding relationship between the aspiring actress and her driver, whose lives are significantly influenced by Howard Hughes. I more or less understand all that; it's just that it could have been wrapped up without a bunch of unnecessary baggage in a significantly shorter time. (55%)
