Mars is definitely not a paradise planet. However, it has not always been such a barren wasteland. Billions of years ago, it was very similar to our own planet today, complete with active volcanoes and surface water. Exploration of the planet Mars can also tell us many things about our own future. For over forty years, probes have been sent from the Earth to explore Mars, to determine the conditions before humans arrive. Mars: The Ultimate Frontier explains the individual steps science has taken before actually sending the first human explorers to the Red Planet. They range from the Mars 500 mission, whose purpose was to simulate the flight to Mars, the development of a sleek new space suit, and the construction of a new type of rocket engine. In addition, a manned mission to Mars must be planned in advance and timed precisely for the point when Earth and Mars are closest to each other in their respective trajectories. It would take two years before a potential return trip could be attempted by the astronauts, who would be constantly endangered by cosmic rays and other factors. As many experts state in the documentary, Mars truly is the ultimate frontier for us at this time, and it is our destiny to send the fi rst astronauts there in the decades to come.
