Marie ist ein schüchterner Teenager, der gemeinsam mit ihren Eltern in einem kleinen Fischerdorf an der abgelegenen dänischen Nordküste lebt. Sie vertraut niemandem, außer Daniel, einem jungen Mann, der sich zu ihrer ungestümen Natur hingezogen fühlt. Als Marie bemerkt, dass sich ihr Körper zunehmend verändert, beginnt sie nach Antworten in der totgeschwiegenen Familiengeschichte zu suchen. Ihr Vater versucht Marie vor den wachsamen wie angstvollen Blicken der übrigen Dorfbewohner zu beschützen, aber in der jungen Frau erwacht eine Macht, die nicht gebändigt werden kann. Mysteriöse Todesfälle häufen sich, die Dorfbewohner werden nervös, mit Ausnahme von Daniel, der ihr ans Ende der Nacht folgen wird... (PROKINO)

Extravagant, originell, minimalistisch, fast mystisch hypnotisch, aber leider ohne Tiefe, ohne Emotionen und ohne einen einzigen Augenblick, der mich überzeugt hätte, dass dieser Film Aufmerksamkeit verdient. Dafür, was für ein Thema hier behandelt wird, ist er überraschend langweilig und nicht wirklich unterhaltsam.

It should go deeper into the minds of the characters (we don’t get to know much about them, actually), or push the envelope more with regards to blood and terror. As it is, the film is too vanilla and not disturbing enough; bland, I’d say. It’s too shallow for a depressive Scandinavian drama and too detached for a horror movie. I get the intention of bringing in the Låt den rätte komma werewolves, but it wasn’t successful.

If Jonas Alexander Arnby had pushed the envelope at the end and given us a bunch of good and detailed gore scenes, the rating would have looked completely different. As it is, this is unfortunately a pretty slow, thankfully not boring horror drama with an interesting premise and a decent Nordic atmosphere, nothing more. Let the Right One In in is a whole other level in terms of atmosphere and storytelling. 60%.

When animals dream. Perhaps a piece of human liver or a village doctor. It’s a study of fears of the familiar, fears of the unknown, and the mist over the Jutland coast. The first two elements lack impact because the coming-of-age and horror aspects rely on classic methods and are somewhat sparing with emotions and psychology (with the exception of the parental farewell of the older Mikkelsen). The final voyage on the fishing boat Demeter confirms that even lycanthropic action won’t rely on gory showiness and leaves the viewer in a misty haze, guessing whether the heart will be struck by silver bullets or Cupid’s arrows.

What attracted me the most was the dense and oppressive atmosphere of the harsh north underlined by the excellent music. The dark romantic story shrouded in mystery also appealed to me a lot and the ethereal wild woman Marie was likable from the start, so despite some reservations about the horror ending, I rate the film quite highly. (70%)
